To understand Mitt Romney, you have to understand Belmont, MA |
|
A beautiful suburb on the other side of Cambridge from Boston. A very wealthy suburb, although there are a few neighborhoods that working class folks who service the wealthy folks might be able to afford if they really stretched their budgets. Robert Welch of the JBSociety lived on Belmont Hill a few blocks from Mitt's home. Many Doctors practicing at the elite Boston Hospitals, financiers and many lawyers practicing at the elite Boston law firms live in Belmont. The people there live in 5000-10000 sf mansions on 1/4 acre parcels of land. They have summer homes in gated communities on the Cape. They have maids, landscapers, personal trainers and they send their kids to private schools like the Belmont Hill School. They commute to Boston in very expensive cars and would find it unthinkable to take the "T".
DURING THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT IN THE 60'S THOSE PROFESSORS AND LAWYERS AND FINANCIERS WHO LIVED ON BELMONT HILL WENT TO ALABAMA TO MARCH IN SELMA. THEN A BLACK HARVARD PROFESSOR TRIED TO BUY A HOUSE ON BELMONT HILL AND THE SAME FOLKS HAD A MELTDOWN, MOUNTED A PROTEST AND RAN THE MAN OUT OF TOWN BECAUSE THEY FEARED FOR THEIR PROPERTY VALUES.
This is the rarified existence that Mitt has known and, aside from a short discussion with a maid about a missed dust bunny, he has no clue about the lives of the 99% he seeks to lead.
I KNOW BECAUSE I GREW UP IN BELMONT NOT FAR FROM MITT AND I SAW IT ALL...THE SCALES FELL FROM MY EYES WHEN THE BLACK PROFESSOR WAS TOLD HE WASN'T WELCOME BY MY LIBERAL NEIGHBORS WHEN I WAS A YOUNG TEENAGER.

1. If they were really wealthy, they could afford to leave. |
|
After a lifetime of putting up with shitty weather and shitty commutes, THEN they have enough money to retire to California or Florida.
