What If Herman Cain Is The Republican Nominee?
Edited on Wed Oct-12-11 03:00 PM by DemocratSinceBirth
It's as if I am living in a parallel universe. This is a man who believes sexual orientation is a choice, being poor is a choice, and all of our problems can be reduced to scrapping our current tax system and replacing it with a nine percent sales tax, a nine percent income tax, and a nine percent corporate tax.

He'll be found out soon enough.

38. Actually, with primaries beginning as early as November,
and with Cain capturing the lead in recent polls, there's a good chance that his momentum will hold up. Remember, Cain has acted crazy from the very beginning and republicans have embraced him, unlike Perry and Bachmann, whose numbers dropped the more people saw them.

3. I doubt he will be.
Mind you, I have no inside knowledge of the GOP base, but I really can't see Cain picking up enough of the vote to win the primaries.

However, if he did get the nomination, I could see him alienating a large portion of the electorate with his wacky ideas and bombastic tendencies. It's a bit of the Ron Paul Crazy Uncle Factor at play.

7. On the bright side, it might work in our favor. I think if Romney
is the nominee, a lot of Dems will sit out the election and/or actually vote for him. If it's Cain, I think Dems will be out in droves to make sure we don't elect a complete nut to the Presidency. Just my opinion. But we ALL need to work to get out the Dem votes.

Which Dems would be o.k. (or at least blase') with the prospect of Romney being POTUS- let alone vote for him?

15. Because they are disappointed with Mr. Obama, because they
don't think their vote counts anyway (me), and because they aren't necessarily afraid of Romney as much as they are afraid of the rest of the Repub noms. Don't get me wrong; I will vote for Mr. Obama and I have never not voted. It just won't be a feel-good feeling this time around.

28. "Mr. Obama"?
When did Presidents start getting referred to as "Mr."? I hear it on the news all of the time and it really irritates me. He is PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and should be referred to as such until he is no longer President (though many ex-presidents typically are still referred to as such). That aside, anybody not afraid of Romney needs to have their head examined IMHO. He will NOT set an example for responsible leadership of this country if elected. He will do the bidding of the teabaggers and others within his party and fight hard for the 1% of this country. If a Republican sends him a bill defunding Planned Parenthood, he will sign it. If they send him a bill repealing Dodd-Frank and/or Affordable Care Act (aka "Obamacare"), he will sign it. If and when a SCOTUS justice retires, he will seek the counsel of the Federalist Society in seeking a replacement for him/her. Make no mistake about it. He is a Republican and if we haven't learned to fear what they have done and will do to the country if and when they get the WH again, well.........................

30. "Mr." is just a little shorter. To me "Obama" is disrespectful.
And even then, every President in my lifetime has been called by their last name and nothing else. I agree with everything you said about Romney but I don't think everyone in this country feels the same way. If, God forbid, it turns out to be a Republican that wins, I would hope that it's Romney and not of the other real wackos. He's wacko enough, but the rest of them are plain batshit crazy.

33. Romney may not seem as "wacko" as the rest of him
but, frankly, I'm not sure anybody knows who or what he really is or what he might do once in office. Personally, if somebody held a gun to my head and forced me to vote for one of the Republican candidates, I'd vote for Huntsman since he seems to be the the sanest and seems the most sincere about where he's coming from. With Romney I just don't know because he changes his positions and panders so much but, yeah, I could see some low-information voters being fooled by him.

9. he knows zero about foreign policy
he just the other day mocked the name of Uzbekistan, and mocked the idea that he might be expected to know the name of its president. That president is actually very important to us and very controversial, it's not an obscure subject at all. At least Bush in 2000 knew something about Musharraf, even if he couldn't recall his name.

Of course Cain is not going to be running against Obama, it will be Mittens.

Cain is just a sop to the radical nazi wing/teabaggers until the election gets closer. They are letting the teabag knuckle draggers have their fun for now.

The wall street hustlers will shove him out at the last minute and put in their boy Mitt.

And the idiot teabaggers will fall for it again, hold their nose and vote for Romney like good little republicans.

Yawn....

29. Not a chance. He may be a thoroughly competent CEO but he doesn't have the political background
to wage a successful national campaign. There's just not enough time for him to develop the new skill set, knowledge base, and instinctual reflexes he'd need; careful shielding by his handlers couldn't make up for his lack of background

44. Cain has a simple, direct, easy-to-understand plan.
This guy is not mealy mouthed like just about every other politician on the planet.

He has a clear plan and he minces no words about it, which is what none of his competitors have, and, frankly, that includes Obama.

Many voters are so distraught that they will follow any clear leader. Stuff like this has happened before, as you well know.

I don't think that it would be wise to underestimate him.
