Anyone who doubts that hateful racism is alive and well in the USA... |
|
need only check out the hundreds of ugly posts in response to an innocuous little story about Michelle Obama's undercover shopping trips. http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/upshot/michelle-obama-undercover-shopper-182754437.html?bouchon=511,dcMaybe some DU love is needed there.

Love definitely is needed over there. The comments sections on yahoo and every other news site is the great shame of our country revealing the hate and loathing of the most bigoted uneducated and rotten.

7. I think there are many people who believe that the most obvious versions of |
|
racism, sexism, and other isms either are gone, or have been dialed back considerably. There are many people who are not women-haters, for example, but who have stereotypes about women as a group, that simply are not borne out by reality.

4. no thanks, why would I want to see that. |

There was a horrible pshopped picture of Michelle that was posted here from a RW hatesite. I saw that thing and just about cried it was so awful.
I made a post in ATA about why such stuff is allowed to be posted here but Skinner just told me that most of us are too dumb here to know what real hate is out there, what the RW is capable of, so he looks at that kind of shit posted here as a learning opportunity, is what he basically said.
I thought that was horrible too. And maybe I'll try to prove him wrong by reposting some Nazi hate shit here, just because, you know, maybe there are some people here that don't know about that kind of stuff.

6. because, like me, you may have friends and acquaintances who truly believe we are "post racial" |
|
and argue until they are blue in the face that there is no racism in anyone's negative behavior toward the Pres. They may be well-intentioned and may not be extremely racist themselves. Or they may be mildly racist and in denial.
The comments on the story provide evidence that they are wrong, wrong, wrong.

9. These comments prove them wrong - but also can lull them into a false sense of security |
|
Unfortunately, many people believe that unless one harbors the despicable attitudes and uses the kind of hateful language evidenced on that website, they have no racism, bigotry or prejudice. Often people look at that sort of ugliness and then pat themselves on the back because they don't think or speak that way and, therefore, are completely free of bias.
In reality, what we see on that website is among the more extreme versions of bigotry, but it is by no means the only kind. In fact, that kind of bigotry is actually easier to deal with because it's so obvious and so repulsive.
What is harder to address and grapple with is the more insidious, often benevolent kind, the kind that many of us don't realize exists in most of us. As we've seen here, attempts to point out and address that kind of bias and bigotry touch extremely sensitive feelings and often trigger vehement, angry reactions.
So, while it's important for us to be aware of the vicious type of racism and bigotry, let's not lead us to assume that the rest of us are pure as the driven snow on issues of race.

11. I'm not sure if you are suggesting that 'I' believe myself to be pure as the driven. |
|
I know I'm not, in almost everything. There is no perfection in me or anyone else.
What I meant by my post was that pictures like the one I saw of Michelle should not have a place here.
There are more people than we like to admit that Are racist Here (re: the Perry article and all the talk here. some believe that just because they are liberals they just cannot be racist and don't go any further to think about it. I will take that to the next level and show how silly that is: Does that mean there are no pedophile while liberals, no while liberals ever break the law?, etc.. yeh, thats silly to say isin't it?)
Back to Michelle's awful pic (and I'm not accusing the poster that linked it here of anything, I don't think it was meant to be sleight of hand or anything, can't remember who is was anyway). Back during the primaries there were certain PUMA/voracious anti-Obama posters that looked up the most extreme racist crap from RW sites and reposted here - all the while feigning 'oh, look how awful', 'o my, isn't that just terrible' but the mission was accomplished - twig into the racists here and pretend and giggle you really pulled a fast one on all of us and the admin here.

12. That's why they like Cain so much. They can point at him and say "see I'm not a racist." |
|
But of course we're not falling for that.

13. That's the same argument that some liberals use to push back on any suggestion that they might be |
|
holding the President to a double standard. They insist that the fact that they voted for a black president is proof that they have no racial bias.
That argument fails regardless on which side of the aisle it's used.

18. Well, unfortunately, there is a fresh set of racist and hateful comments on there now. |
|
I guess people have to constantly report these comments to Yahoo, since there are so many jerks out there.
