MLK Memorial: The President spoke of PROTEST... |
|
Edited on Sun Oct-16-11 12:46 PM by YvonneCa
...today: http://www.c-span.org/Events/Martin-Luther-King-Jr-Memorial-Dedicated-Today/10737424754/We here have often criticized the RW for responding to sound bites rather than context of the words of our leaders. Rather than discuss isolated phrases of President Obama's speech today, I hope many here will listen to ALL of it. The President spoke of both the past and the present struggles of our country. I hope my fellow DUers are listening. :patriot:

1. He did, after all, say "Yes we can." not "Yes I can". |

one recording TV One and the other recording CSPAN and also logged in here to get sick on my stomach at the vile attacks. :(
For those reading this post - CSPAN plans on re-airing at ~3:00 pm EDT (or actually last I saw before I turned it off, they changed it to ~3:20 pm EDT, but probably better to check in with them now just to make sure).

6. One of my favorite things about DU has always been... |
|
...how people here took the time to inform and educate themselves about an issue. The discussions that would flow from that were almost magical...and very rare in today's environment. I always would learn something new. Sometimes that would lead me to revise my opinion...sometimes not...but I always came to a better grasp of the issue under discussion.
We are living in troubled times. IMO, we all have a duty as citizens to inform our decisions/opinions. Thanks for your post, FrenchieCat. :)

8. Thanks for the link. Cherrypicked sound bites of outrage are propaganda, no less and no more... |

... and no matter which side of the aisle does it. What's interesting is how much and how many alleged Democrats employ this method in attacking President Obama.

So many of us forgot or in many cases did listen to what Obama must have said thousands of times..."Yes "WE" Can"! However, when Obama took office & began trying to put in place policies to help struggling Americans & stop the loss of nearly 800,000 jobs a month the attacks from the Right began!! Wall Street Reporters attacking Obama on all the financial networks while the Koch Bros., Talk Radio & FOX "News" began building a smoke & mirrors campaign to distract Americans from the FUCKING DISASTER they left Obama with called the Tea Party...Where were "WE"? Why was there not an OWS then when Obama was clearly being attacked by Wall Street defenders for speaking out against the "Fat Cats" on Wall Street? Where were "WE" when Obama was trying to close GITMO literally ALL BY HIMSELF?
Where have "WE" been? SAD!
When I see people on DU accuse Obama of trying to "co-opt" OWS it makes me sick to my stomach...But there literally is no talking to these people & that is really SAD! They lie about him here on DU on a daily basis & even come to post that should be embraced by all of us, like the OP on Obama MLK speech, & attack him. Oh well.
Anyway, THANKS again for the post & video link.

13. Memorial stones shipped from China, designed by Chinese artist. |
|
Even the stones were shipped from China, assembled by Chinese workers...
Martin Luther King was born in Georgia, where there are granite and marble quarries. Nearby Alabama (remember King also pastored in Montgomery AL) also has some of the world's best marble and granite.
This monument was not designed by an American or even a black artist. It's depressing that the Memorial commission paid for Chinese designers, stones and labor when American artists and workers are begging for work.
I love MLK. Do not like outsourcing.

14. Didn't the artist win a contest or somesuch based on artistic ability |
|
What exactly makes him unworthy of making the memorial?

15. It was a blind contest |
|
The objection to the nationality of the artist, who was selected truly based upon the "content of his character," i.e., his artistic ability, is rather ironic given the subject of the sculpture, isn't it?

16. The Memorial is more than just... |

...the statue. Its existence on the mall is the point, no matter who designed it. JMHO.
