Does Obama deserve Nobel after 'amount of people he has killed'?

Asks Jeff Landry (R-La).

Watch for this emerging meme. Poor bin Laden. Poor Gaddafi... :nopity:

Does Obama deserve Nobel after 'amount of people he has killed'?
Rep. Landry: Does Obama deserve Nobel after 'amount of people he has killed'?

By Daniel Strauss - 10/22/11 10:58 AM ET

After the death of Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi at the hands of Libyan rebels, one Republican legislator wondered Saturday whether President Obama deserves the Nobel Prize he won in 2009.

"Well, I'm trying to see what the new criteria is for getting a Nobel Peace Prize. Remember they gave it to President Obama right when he took office," Rep. Jeff Landry (R-La.) said on Fox Business Network. "And right now, I mean when you look at the, amount of people he has killed worldwide, you think to yourself, wow, what do they give it for? Maybe a new set of criteria. I don't know, it amazes me as well."

Landry's comments come a few days after news broke that Gadhafi had been killed during fighting in Gadhafi's hometown of Sirte, Libya.

Obama authorized U.S. forces to join a multilateral coalition to protect Libyan civilians from Gadhafi military forces earlier this year.

Gadhafi's death marks the latest foreign policy success for the Obama administration. Obama has also been credited for the killing of Osama bin Laden during a raid by U.S. Navy SEALS on a compound where the al Qaeda leader had been hiding in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The Obama administration has also been successful in killing a number of other high level terrorists.

The Nobel Committee said Obama won the 2009 award for his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

24. I wish that were true...
The American people still think the Republicans are the best at defending America despite the FACT that the Republicans have been utter failures in defending this country & President Obama has been a booming success!

It just goes to show the mental hold Conservatives have over most Americans thinking after 25yrs of Talk Radio & FOX "News" when it comes to Foreign Policy, the country's prosperity & other issues.

http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/184723-poll-majority-thinks-gop-likely-to-do-a-better-job-on-fostering-prosperity-anti-terrorism

The Republicans destroyed this country economy & Obama saved it, Republicans allowed the biggest attack on American soil & then used it to pull off the biggest blunder in US military/foreign policy history...But none of that matters to the American public who have been brainwashed for 25+yrs.

This shows beyond a shadow of a doubt the uphill climb the Democrats have to just pass centrist bills let alone many of our Progressive ideas! It also shows how ridiculous some are when they criticize President Obama for not changing the country in 3yrs! President Obama knows it will take a long drawn out fight where we will have to take what we can get when we can get it...But that is not good enough for those who think Obama is nothing but an evil Republicans dead set on doing Wall Street's business for them. SAD!

We must stick together to overcome the strangle hold the Right has on this country & people's thinking!

4. Context of Nobel Committee quote:
The Nobel Peace Prize for 2009

<...>

Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

18. And from the first paragraph on the first link

" ... The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons."

p.s. And Obama's work on this started while he was still a U.S. Senator.

11. True
but only in a physical sense. Quite a few of Bush's policies that the voters did not want to see extended by a President McCain have been maintained, including the war in Afghanistan and the tax cuts.

I really wish the Nobel Peace Prize committee would return to the practice of giving it out only after a person's achievements have stood at least a little of the test of time. Jimmy Carter had to wait over two decades for his, after the Camp David Accords had produced half a generation of peace between Israel and Egypt. Paradoxically, we stand a decent chance of losing that peace before Obama's first term is up.

8. According to republicans...
We should always fight "them" over "there" so we don't have to fight "them" over "here". Well, the way I see it, the president (along with allies) has been fighting and killing "them" over "there" preventing Americans from having to fight "them" over "here". So, yeah, I say let the president hold on to the prize.

Republicans really don't have much, do they?! Pathetic.

9. Obama is NOT some kind of genocidal maniac
Why should he have to apologize for whacking a few terrorists? Did the rewarding of the Peace Prize leave him prohibited from using force against legitimate targets? I'd concede the point if he was awarded a Peace Prize and then invaded a country like Bush invaded Iraq but that isn't what we're talking with (re: Obama).

16. You know...
if a Republican president would have popped two of the most significant terrorists in the world, he'd be writing op-eds demanding a Nobel Peace Prize for that person.

A Democratic president pops the same two terrorists, and he's out there wondering if said Democratic president deserves the Nobel he already got.

29. I think the Nobel Peace Prize is for people who make the world a safer place
It's not about whether the recipient has never killed or sent soldiers to their death. Lots of people think that Bombing Bosnia prevented genocide, there it was Nobel Peace Prize worthy.
