The President was hilarious last night on Jay Leno
His ease, grace, dignity, good humor and common touch were a delight to see.

Among other things, his story about smelling up the presidential limousine with chicken was priceless.

And I love the way he cracks himself up.

Great fun to watch.

44. Just for you - since I mentioned it - the baby whisperer is back:
SFGate: President Obama spent only a few hours in San Francisco on Tuesday, but he took just seconds to prove once again why he’s the baby whisperer.

-snip-
Obama spotted 6-month-old Josie Knight, who was crying while being held by her mother, Gina Odom, 37, of Oakland. Odom, a real estate agent who had received an invitation to meet Obama, had dressed her daughter in her prettiest pink outfit for the occasion.

“It’s OK,” the president said repeatedly, taking the squalling infant into his arms.
The baby didn’t seem to know what was going on and cried for a moment longer before calming. Obama bounced gently and held her for about 10 seconds before flashing a smile and returning her to Odom.

…. “She was crying and he grabbed her and kind of soothed her,” Odom said. “He asked, ‘How old is she?’ and I said, ‘Six months.’ He kind of laughed and said, ‘I think she’s hungry.’
He just held her and gave her back to me.”

The incident evoked memories of when Obama similarly soothed a crying baby outside the White House in June. “You know, I just think he’s a natural,” Odom said. “He’s obviously a dad. He knew to bring her close, and he kind of whispered and just soothed her.”

18. "They are giving up their power to change?" The problem is, so is Obama, over and over
That's the issue. No one thinks he "caused" the police riot in Oakland, but the optics of this administration, and the refusal to take hard stands, all speak to an inability to address the fundamentals of the age, or to really tackle the difficult decisions and "hard healing" that need to be done...

22. Well, since you already "know" all of this about him, why keep complaining about it?
You and several others seem to always know what to expect from him (the worst), what his motives are (the worst), what he's going to do to improve things (nothing), and what it will take to get him to change his ways (nothing, because he's an insensitive, bought-and-paid-for tool of the 1%), yet you keep fussing and fussing and fussing about it. What's the point of all this complaining if you already know the guy is useless? Why do you keep wasting your time and energy bitching about someone you think is this hopeless?

25. I'm just asking where the "hope" and "change" that I worked for and supported
...have gone, starting with the appointments he began making right after the election, all the way through the silence on critical topics, the renewed war on the 4th amendment and marijuana (for example) et al.

You're also forgetting that Obama said "make me do it" in terms of actually changing things. So that's what some of us are after now. How do we make him be the man he was on the campaign trail?

Being a sycophant and constant apologist for those in the corridors of power isn't, I suspect, what he meant. Or how to do it.

51. the real problem is with people on this board. everyone does not
think like you do, I don't and I'm not homer for president obama but I don't come up with crap like blaming him for the police in oakland. it's just crazy to even say something like that.

Over and over again I keep saying the same thing. if you don't like president obama policies run for office yourself. put your thoughts out there and lets see what happens, run as a progressive and lets see how many votes you get. Can anyone on this board even show me a progressive that's been elected to a national office that has run on a purely progressive stance, I don't think so.

Maybe he should just put on a hairshirt and self-flagellate to prove to you that he will never find a moment's enjoyment as long as someone in the world isn't happy.

Do you go through life bitching and whining every moment because someone somewhere is having a hard time? Or do you just expect the President to never smile or laugh or be in good cheer as long as something YOU care about isn't going the way YOU want?

Whatever - your grumbling is not going to stop me from smiling at whatever I choose whenever I choose - you know, living a well-rounded life.

29. Maybe presidents should just stay in the WH so they can monitor all of the bad events.
And only leave the WH to visit the site where bad events are occurring. Of course then the question would arise as to why they were at one only mildly bad event while an even worse event was going on somewhere else!

41. So by that "logic",
no one running for office should ever be seen enjoying anything ever, since people struggle and die every day.

They should never publicly smile at their family members or constituents.

They should never tell a joke or be allowed to enjoy any humor, anywhere.

How can the President or any elected official be allowed to DO that while someone, SOMEwhere, is having a hard time?

.
.
.
.

Really?

35. A caller just asked Thom Hartmann why Gov. Brown doesn't step up to the plate on the Oakland event
Compared it to Pres. Kennedy stepping in to ensure students got to attend schools in the South. Of course he didn't personally go there, but he did send troops. Just wondering if Brown could do that? Thom seemed to think it was a local issue, what the Oakland police did, but curious to know if you think your governor should get involved?

Oh, and BTW, I thought the President did a fine job on the Leno show, which as you now know was taped prior to the Oakland situation.

Peace and blessings.

But apparently it is a noble endeavor to sit at one's computer bitching and moaning and whining about the President while people are out in the streets - yet the President actually doing his job (which involves more than cheering on the people sitting at their computers) means he doesn't give a shit.

53. Meh. The Country's in real trouble. But nice to see the WH's priorities.
Let them eat cake. Hardy-har-har. (Insert laugh track here.)

60. The country's been in trouble since Reagan. Are you saying the president...
shouldn't have had a laugh all these years? The over-the-top & hateful rhethoric coming from folks claiming to be progressive just doesn't fit with the progressive nature. I'm not sure what the president frowning would have accomplished, but you stick with your tp's. :hi:

62. I'm sure he was. Too bad the OPD was gassing and shooting rubber bullets at innocent people.
The juxtaposition of the two events is surreal.

63. Where do these talking points come from? You do know that the show was taped...
well before the attack happened, right? And even so, what was the president supposed to do about a police action in Oakland? Your outrage, if you can call it that, seems woefully misplaced. You have a legitimate gripe against the OPD, the city council, the mayor's office, and perhaps even the governor. But to suggest that the president even knew about this incident before it ever happened is just weird, and outrageous.

83. I'm not outraged. Simply making an observation......
while I was watching Obama, was reading tweets about the happenings in Oakland. It was surreal.

The bashing's far too well coordinated.

87. I've had similar thoughts. It is very well coordinated. The president
was supposed to refrain from levity because an incident happened somewhere in the world at the time he was smiling. If that's the case, then he'd never smile again.

81. Obama is no fool.
Yes it was great seeing him on Leno. "Waiting for the last one to get voted off the island?" Great stuff. Does anyone on here ever think how next years election will go?
The Reps have absolutely no one to run against him. First it was flip flop Mitt. You'll never see him get elected because he's a mormon. The reps will not stand for that. Then Michelle O'Bachman. What a waste of time she is. Then, out of no where Rick Perry is top of the leader board after 1 week? Give me a break. His approval rating is so low now, he should go back to killing innocent people. Then Herman Cain takes over? Go back to selling pizza's. He's better at that. Congress is a waste of everyone's time, especially the reps. They can't even vote for something they wanted. Believe me, this will come back and bite them is the ass. And "The tan man" and O'Connell are so far right, no one is even listening to them. The republican party is making such a mockery of the political system, it makes me sick thinking about it.

Has anyone looked up how many accomplishments Obama has done? There were 244 of them as of a year ago. I guarantee this will be brought up before the election. No living president has done more for this country in these troubling times than him. He is all about the American people, not his party. I was really pissed when Obama tabled taxing the rich last year, but he has a plan. I got over it, and it will be brought up again around election time, if not sooner. It will pass.
It will take at least 4 more years just to scratch the cover on our recovery, which the reps put us in. Bush is proving to be more of an idiot than I previously thought. Reps have no interest in helping us, just their party. It's quite sad and they have exactly what is coming to them next year. Even some republicans have publicly said how bad it is.

I can guarantee all of this will be brought up when his campaign gets going. I'm really looking forward to it. Obama is no fool. He should win hands down. I just hope he keeps his hands off Social Security and Medicare. That will end his election, and Lord knows who will be in charge next.

Your thoughts?

86. This is a pretty amazing display of what DU has become-a simple OP about the DEMOCRATIC president
being amusing on a television talk show becomes the fodder for dozens of posts attacking him in language and attitude that would be right at home on any right wing website.

I used to think that this was simply a few disaffected Democrats but I am starting to agree with some of the people here who believe that DU has been invaded by trolls. These kinds of responses are all-too predictable, the language is too similar and the themes are too closely aligned.

They'd have to go to Cambridge for a year to be elevated to "troll" status.

95. Here are his chicken in the limo comments . . .
When asked about his Monday visit to locally beloved Los Angeles eatery Roscoe's House of Chicken n' Waffles, the President gave a finger lickin' good account of chowing down on his take-out order in the Presidential limo. Mr. Obama had the #9, the Country Boy, which is 3 wings with a waffle on the side. He admitted that he actually had no intention of eating the chow, which he carried out of the restaurant in a plastic bag (at left).

"Originally it was just a way to be out there and say hi to everybody but once we go in the car it smelled pretty good."

So he caved in, Mr. Obama said.

"I'm eating the wings...I got the hot sauce on there--and the fancy presidential limousine is there smelling like...chicken," he said, to applause from the audience.

"And we actually were going to a fundraiser with Will Smith and Jada and I didn't realize it was so close. So suddenly we pull up and my sleeves are rolled up and I got a spot on my tie and my fingers are all--and i'm looking for a Wet One...and picking chicken out of my teeth."

"It was not elegant," President Obama said, adding "but outstanding chicken."

He got applause and whoops from the audience.
