So, then I wandered over to YouTube and found a few other ads from 1952 (but they wouldn't be considered attack ads like the one above)

1. It's the lack of content that's most striking in these ads.

Of course, television was still a new medium, and candidates (and their supporters) not only didn't know how to appeal to audiences with it, but, since most voters didn't have television sets yet, they probably didn't think it was as important as other venues (and they were right about that). It would be another twelve years before it was taken seriously for a presidential election.
