I need some help with presidential quotes, and my fellow DUers are the best |
|
so if anyone can answer these 2 questions I will be most appreciative:
John Kennedy said to (someone):" If we do this right, we probably won't be here four years from now." Does anyone know who he was speaking to, and in what context the quote was made? I remember reading this in Richard Reeve's book and I can't seem to find it again.
Lyndon Johnson, after signing the Voting Rights Act and responding to someone saying "Congratulations, Mr. President, you did the right thing". and Johnson said. "Yes, and we've lost the South for a generation."
I have a feeling he said that to Hubert Humphrey, but could it also be Martin Luther King? I know it's a famous quote so someone out there should be able to help me on that one.

2. What Johnson meant about the South was losing the White Demcratic vote. And he was right. |

3. Yes, I don't think they have ever come back. But then I am 70 years |

old and they were known as the "Dixiecrats" long before that statement and what that signified was that they often voted with the rethugs. However, they did count when it came to committee control and such.

Nixon was already plotting his "southern strategy". Johnson was only wrong about the timeline (if you consider "a generation" to mean 25 years)-the South has been lost forever. Bobby Kennedy was the only politician to hold both the black and working class/poor white communities together.
