5. We are a Conference Committee away from the first health care reform since Johnson... |
|
Yes, that's historic, even to those here who don't like the bill.
Of course, those who oppose the bill think it is historic in the same as as as the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius on August 24, 79 C.E. was historic.
I congratulate the Senate on their historic achievement and look forward to pushing them to make the bill better, but I am a proud incrementalist...

6. So I found something we all can agree on |
|
...but for different reasons ;)
The bill sounds pretty good actually and the PO was considered by many to be a minor issue as far as getting many people covered. What gets lost in the shuffle is that now that we have a structure to build from, there is no reason that public plans can't be offered in the exchanges and the feds or state governments could mandate these at a later date - especially if (when) the insurance companies start fucking everybody over (as usual).

I think it's going to be about as historic as helmet laws.
It mandates something people don't really want to be forced into doing, because mandating it will save the insurance companies money (& make them a shitload more money.) Lots of us will just ignore the mandate and pay the tax penalty whenever we're caught, because that will be cheaper than even a subsidized health insurance plan... and we'll argue in bankruptcy proceedings that the tax penalties we've paid should exonerate us of our obligation to pay for ER care.
We'll probably lose, but we'll be so screwed over by then that we won't really care.
The poor will learn to do with even less, in order to assure that the corporations and government entities paying for Health Insurance won't have their rates climbing quite as fast... and in another 20 or 30 years, once the poor have been squeezed unto "turnip-dom", then a new round of HCR will be worked on, wherein the middle managers will be saddled with an increased portion of the expenses, so that companies will be once again able to compete in a global marketplace, and continue to give out the benefits needed to draw "the best and the brightest" as administrators...
