We historically dont mandate purchases of private products, we would have raised the cost through income taxes in years past.
And, yes there IS a difference.
Through taxes the amount paid is income based.
Those with little income (probably the same people that have no healthcare) wouldnt pay anything.
Hey look, no "subsidies" needed!
(A side note, the money could still have been paid out by the government to buy private insurance for those without healthcare currently.)
The Republican ideal of "individual responsibility" (cue John Wayne) by forcing people to buy insurance is about as far from traditional Democratic values as we can get.

10. What about car seats for children? |
|
One is mandated to buy those.
Or do you just say that you don't have to drive your kid anywhere? You can get a baby sitter and leave the kids at home? Or not have kids?
This is a mandate to buy a private product.

11. I seem to remember... |
|
...a clause in the bill that says if something in the bill is deemed unconstitutional, it can be adjudicated separately, & will not impact the rest of the bill... or, words to that effect...

13. I'll say it again. That would mean single payer would be unamerican . |
|
Because it would enforce a defacto mandate requiring everyone to be insured.

15. Mandated insurance is not "un American", |
|
and has been going on for years.
Depending on the state, all sorts of businesses, from contractors to private detectives, are mandated to purchase insurance already . It could be fire insurance, workers’ compensation, disability coverage, liability, various forms of bonds, etc.
None of this has been found to be un Constitutional.
