Edited on Wed Dec-23-09 11:39 AM by uponit7771
...not "persuaded them via loud and numerous speeches"...

The police can FORCE you go to jail if you don't want to ...

Obama can do what to FORCE Lieberman & Nelson do what he wants?

Thx

Edit to use the word force, some folk are getting confused and still posting tactics of persuasion...

1. Do you think you could put all of this garbage into just one long post?
It's all basically the same thing you know. Worship.

3. Have Reid take away their committe chairmanships...
...no, he can't force Reid to, but there's a lot of power that goes with the office of the Prez, he can withold support for their re-elections, veto bills they favor...he can make it known he's displeased, do something other than, say, ok, screw us over...Next!

9. Reid can't just "take away chairmanships" I don't think. The caucus has to vote don't they?

Just a guess that the Republicans won't be interested in helping us out

21. Obama actually has very little leverage over Lieberman and Nelson
Lieberman has already threatened to run as a Republican in 2012, so Obama witholding support is not going to bother him too much.

Nelson comes from one of the reddest states in the country, and thus probably will not be looking for any support from Obama come election time either. The more he distances himself from the President the better in the eyes of his constituants.

25. That would just make it more likely that Lieberman moves to the Rethug
caucus -- and we would not be better off if he did. For example, we just managed to pass an extremely important budget bill with Lieberman's help -- without it government would have ground to a halt.

4. Lieberman and Nelson are only motivated by their own self-interests.
The more liberal Democratic senators are willing to compromise because they know that some reform now means more reform later. They're not willing to throw the baby out with the bathwater, unlike Lieberman and Nelson.

So, Obama can threaten, yell or whatever, but Lieberman and Nelson don't need Obama in order to get re-elected. They don't care about the welfare of the people.

11. Even if Obama threw some underhanded threats their way, it still wouldn't get their vote.
Especially not Liebermans... he would just take his ball and go caucus with the Republicans.

27. You don't know much about CT...Liar-berman would never win as a Repuke,
he only got in because he siphoned enough away from the dems and repukes as an independent...he threatens to go with the repukes, but he never will fully because it's political suicide...he just uses it as a bargaining chip, nad the dems never bargain back.

I hope there is no legal way for a president to make a congressman/senator do something. We may as well get rid of congress and call the president our king.

18. The President cannot do a darned thing...what needs to be done must be done by
senators on the left wing of the party. They must demand the same deals that those two received for the people of their states. Expand coverage.

Get the CIA spooks assigned to White house covert missions and have them leave a horses head on the Senator's bedpost.

With a note.
