I get bored with people who disagree with me and find their arguments less than convincing |

3. I like the arguments here, and I'll gladly concede a point if I'm wrong. |
|
But my arguments are about how Obama's base is disheartened. I really don't know if he technically "lied," but I do know a lot of us think he did.

5. actually i find the worst arguments with points I disagree with to be the most entertaining |
|
which is ironic.
i'm human.
if i see an extremely stupid, poorly thought out argument stated really, really loudly, i pounce. it's fun, it's easy, it probably doesn't change any minds.
i don't have as much attention span for substantive arguments.
interesting thing is: we are all basically on the same side so what happens is that the people arguing over the details oppose the bill because of those details and those supporting support it because of the big picture --and that dynamic of argument accounts for half the argument over the health bill.
however, people who oppose the bill overall because of the big picture (giveaway, etc.) meet supporters who say that this provision or that provision (the details) are very important and the bill should be passed for that reason.
in other words, rarely are we arguing on the same level, which is probably why we are all talking past each other. i don't imagine fixing this, people care about what they care about, but it is something i notice.

And isn't it fun to get sh{# off your chest! My family can take only so much of my griping about politics.

4. Changing people's minds is never easy... |
|
That's what keeps me interested in the debate. The ever-going effort to change people's minds. And, I love it when someone pierces my armor and makes me think a little more deeply than I had previously. I sit there and it's an "ahhhhh....." moment. I've sent a few thank you PM's when people manage to do that to me. It's part of the process of continuing to learn.
If you just want to be lazy and accept what you know, not worried about looking for that line of reasoning that will help people understand what it is you consider important, I could see being unamused with the debate as well.
As far as changing people's minds, I think the first step is to understand what they're concerned about. The second step is to address those concerns, by framing them in a manner they can relate to and point out the conclusions, at the very least, were not as simple as they had previously thought. Calling people Republicans as an insult, or other simplistic labeling, is the antithesis to this process. If that's all you wanna do, I agree with you, you have no interest in the debate.
Another mark of the antithesis to my approach is when people just say, "look, this leader said that". Who cares what that leader says... "Don't follow leaders, watch your parking meters". Bonus points if you know who said that...

9. There's always going to be fights here. |
|
DU has two goals--to support the Democratic party and to promote issues that are important to the left. Often the two are mutually exclusive so naturally there will be collisions here. That's what I think, anyway. I don't mind when people disagree with what I say, I just appreciate it when they are honest about their reasons. :hi:
