They demonized Howard Dean, what will they do with Louise Slaughter?

House Rules Committee Chair: Kill The Bill And Start Over

"Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY), chairman of the powerful Rules Committee, wrote in a CNN op-ed today that the health care bill should be scrapped entirely.

"The Senate health care bill is not worthy of the historic vote that the House took a month ago," Slaughter wrote.

She listed her problems with the Senate bill: an individual mandate, no public option, no antitrust exemption and the Nelson abortion language, among other things.

"Supporters of the weak Senate bill say "just pass it -- any bill is better than no bill. I strongly disagree," she wrote. "It's time that we draw the line on this weak bill and ask the Senate to go back to the drawing board. The American people deserve at least that."

On edit:

Not exactly :sarcasm: but close enough a tag. Did not think I needed it.

DU GDP will defend this bill to the end.

On Edit: Of course she will "back down". Of course.

I would think the fact that the president openly did not tell the truth about his prior support and non support of parts of the bill...would matter. But it does not apparently.

1. Agreed. It would be better to do nothing.

Kill the bill.

Forcing people to buy insurance is no more the answer to a failed health care system than forcing people to buy houses is the solution to homelessness.

BTW, do you what Johnny "Hedge Fund" Edwards is doing these days?

Has he fessed up to fathering Reille's child yet? What's he waiting for?

Some leader he turned out to be. What a loser.

6. She is posturing of course
A little poker before the conference committee convenes to send a message to the Senate that the House cannot simply be steamrolled. What her vote ultimately will be is anyone's guess but I would fully expect this to happen now.

9. Grandstanding but the right thing to do.

Slaughter is protecting the power-base of the House and the progressives. They were basically steamrolled with the stimulus and want to give the appearance (at least) that it won't happen again. If the bill is not changed signficantly, it's because of the Senate, not the House.

By the way, she did not say "kill the bill". Note this bit - "Now don't get me wrong; the current House and Senate bills are a significant improvement over the status quo."

but...

18. Now there are two more:
"Update II: From TPM, Lee and Woolsey also. Opposition is snowballing among progressives now.

Reps. Woolsey And Lee: Final Bill Must Have A Public Option
moments ago

In a statement released today, Democratic Reps. Lynn Woolsey and Barbara Lee demanded that the final health care bill must emerge from conference committee with several "key provisions" from the House bill, including the public option.

TPM

More from Lee and Woolsey:

"Now that the Senate is poised to pass its version of a health care reform bill, it is time to turn to reconciling it with the House legislation," California Reps. Barbara Lee and Lynn Woolsey said in a joint statement Wednesday. "For Congress to achieve true health care reform we must have a meaningful conference process that integrates both bills into the best possible piece of legislation for the American people."

Politico: Lee, Woolsey push for public option

Their top priorities are as follows:
- A public option - Affordability protections - Tighter market regulations - Employer mandates - Tax surcharges

19. She most certainly did not say to kill the bill
She doesn't want the House to simply vote on the Senate bill without making changes and having its own input (as is suggested may happen). She did not say to kill the Senate bill. It's going to pass and she just wants there to be a substantive conference process instead of the "lightning round" in which the House is simply asked to vote on the Senate's version.

21. Completely Dishonest
Just read the Op-Ed where the words "Kill the Bill and Start Over" don't appear anywhere, not even in the NY Times generated headline.

This is an utter fabrication on the part of TPM. You know what? Bullshit stinks when it comes from Faux News and it doesn't smell any better coming from them.

Have an honest debate on the subject or STFU.

And just to be clear: I agree with Slaughter, and I hope the Senate version can be modified in conference to pick up some of the language from the House. But if both sides want to drop the Stupak Amendment, that would be fine by me.

Those were in quotes.

Honestly, come on...doesn't that all sound so familiar?

I used the headline from TPM. Follow the link.
