CNN: Support for Lieberman drops 10 points

Lieberman's favorables drop over past two weeks

By Michael O'Brien - 12/23/09 12:54 PM ET

Sen. Joe Lieberman's (I-Conn.) favorable ratings have taken almost a 10-point drop in the past two weeks, a new poll found.

31 percent of people told a CNN poll conducted Dec. 16-20 that they had a favorable opinion of Lieberman, a key Senate centrist who'd opposed healthcare reform only until recently. Opinion toward Lieberman, though, was down from a 40 percent favorable rating in the same CNN poll conducted December 2-3 of this year.

Poll respondents' unfavorable opinion of Lieberman ticked upward over the same period. 34 percent of those polled said they now have an unfavorable opinion of Lieberman, compared to 28 percent who have an unfavorable opinion.

Back in February Quinnipiac ran numbers that Lieberman would be crushed by Bluementhal

http://www.quinnipiac.edu/x1296.xml?ReleaseID=1259

By a narrow 48 - 45 percent margin, voters disapprove of the job Sen. Joseph Lieberman is doing and give him a negative 43 - 49 percent favorability. Republicans approve 75 - 20 percent. Democrats disapprove 70 - 21 percent and independent voters split 48 - 46 percent.

By contrast, State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal gets a 79 - 12 percent approval rating and 71 - 13 percent favorability rating. Republicans approve of the Democrat 66 - 25 percent. Democrats approve 85 - 6 percent and independent voters approve 81 - 10 percent.

If Sen. Lieberman faces Blumenthal in 2012, the Democratic challenger has an early 58 - 30 percent lead. Republicans go with Lieberman 67 - 23 percent while Blumenthal leads 83 - 9 percent among Democrats and 55 - 29 percent among independent voters.

"Sen. Lieberman's approval is negative, but up slightly. It's a long time until 2012, but this poll shows that if Connecticut's popular Democratic Attorney General Richard Blumenthal takes on Lieberman, as the buzz suggests, Lieberman would get crushed," Schwartz said.

10. Lieberman will switch to GOP long before that
and that would be the only honest thing he has ever done in his life.

8. 10 points but at that point he was going to lose by a landslide

He was down to 9% of Democrats so he has wiped that out and started losing Republicans now lol

14. So...
Here's what I'm wondering. If Ben Nelson's Medicaid sweetheart deal gets 86'd, and it looks like it might, he'd have to vote for the bill when it comes back to show he wasn't in it just for the money. And if Joe's poll numbers are so low, maybe he'll vote for it when it comes back from conference even if it has a public plan in order to get the poll numbers back up. That is, of course, provided Joe cares about being reelected -- which I'm not sure he is. Or, maybe I'm just over thinking this a little bit. :)

BTW, I don't buy the spin that it's the people who are against HCR bringing his numbers down.

4. I don't think the scuzzy asshole cares.
He doesn't work for the people and he is probably resigned to leaving the Senate after this last reign of error and graft.

13. For his tomfoolery, he'll have to find a new day job.
Loserman has fallen from an almost-winning vice presidential candidate (2000) to an independent (2008) to health care bill killer (2009) to an unemployed wreck (2012). If the apocalypse will happen nearly 3 years from now, only Lieberman and whoever else killed the public option would be swallowed into a black hole.

One thing I think we can all agree on -- Joe Lieberman is a pencil dick.

He needs to go.

16. It's possible that Republican support for Lieberman has fallen
Edited on Wed Dec-23-09 11:33 PM by mcablue
The poll doesn't break numbers down by party, but the fact that Lieberman supports a bill that no Republican in the Senate supports may easily have hurt his standing among GOP'ers. I believe his support among Democrats has fallen too.

17. Good!
Whatever party he is in, Lieberman is a traitor. What happened to his endorsement of the expansion of Medicare. He could have easily made it happen simply by voting for cloture.
