1. This bill is nothing but a trillion dollar giveaway to insurance companies.
Have you seen the Americans for Stable Quality Healthcare ads? Big Pharma is paying $150 million to get this turkey passed.

Kill it. Start over with single payer, the only system proven to work worldwide by increasing care and cutting costs, promoting longer lifespans and lower infant mortality.

7. Yeah, kill it and start over with a sure fire failure. If congress won't pass the PO, how the fuck
do you think they're gonna pass single payer.

Please paint for us that picture, how does that work?

22. The majority of the population supports single payer 2-1.
That's how. Vote anyone out who does not actively support it. Make it a single issue vote. I have.

38. Well it would work if we had direct voting, like the proposition system in California,
but we don't, we have a congress that is composed of rich people who can afford to run campaigns.

45. And so those rich people will let us amend and improve this, why?
They promised to fix NAFTA. They didn't. They promised to fix the Patriot Act. They didn't.

No bill is better than a horrendous bill, which this is.

10. Gotta a Robocall today from an outfit telling me to contact my
senators and let them know that I am against this healthcare bill.

At the end of the call, they said; push the number 1, and this will take you to your Senator's switchboard. I didn't dare, cause I couldn't tell where it would really take me, and I'll be damned
if I voice opposition to something close to what I have been working for all along.

28. Single payer is not the only proven system...
It may be the most commonly proved system, but it's not the only one. The Netherlands is the country in Europe with the highest satisfaction rating. Their system provides universal coverage and all insurance is provided by private companies. Now, those insurance companies are much more highly regulated than those in the USA, but they are still private.

If you're interested in proven health care systems, maybe you'd be interested in a story PBS did on the Netherlands program? If you wanna watch it, follow this link and click on "Stream Video": http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/health/july-dec09/healthcare1_10-07.html">Link

Democratic Senator of Oregon, Ron Wyden, wrote a health reform bill for the US which was based on the Netherlands system. It had very good bipartisan support before the current way of just jimmy-sawing everything together started to get pushed through and ended up as a straight party-line vote. For easy reading on the Healthy Americans Act, read here:

Yes, the Healthy Americans Act is my favorite. I think it's great legislation. That's why I'm promoting it...

the more pertient question is regarding how the Senate should vote on the "current bill".

9. Seriously...I'll never be able to wrap my head around this board.
One minute the entire board is anti-Obama and believe that he is a corporatist and this bill needs to be killed. Now, you have a substantial shift in the way the bill is looked at. Interesting, but I still think this board is bipolar.

18. Other -- Want to be able to support it -- but thinking about it makes my blood boil
Honest answer. Even with the good stuff, I just cannot bring myself to support it because I am convinced it contains some fundamental flaws that I truly believe will bring more harm than good over time.

It's going to pass, and I can't stop it. So my opinion is irrelevant anyway.

20. I was excited for the bill, then I became very disappointed, then I started to warm up to the bill
again. This has been a roller coaster ride for me. I have made three OPs about this bill, one was neither for nor against the bill, one was against the bill, and one was for the bill.

I voted, "I don't know."

I think this is the least popular position on DU.

This plan doesn't have everything I wanted, but I'm happy our party was able to come together after a lot of debate. Face it. Our party is way top diverse to come up with a progressive bill.

24. The senate bill is far to the right of the Baucus bill
The Baucus bill that was too conservadem, but was going to get fixed in the senate, is now the more progressive of the two bills.

Every step of the way it went more and more to the right, just like everything the Democrats do.

In 2010, legislators will be more concerned about getting re-elected than health-care reform. If we lose seats, it is dead anyway.

43. Looks like rational people are winning this poll
That's a great thing. We need a foot in the door as someone said.

This country still has a lot of completely irrational conservatives to battle on every issue, a lot of people who live in very liberal areas of the country have no idea what even the local media is like in red states. A lot of these people would do anything to stop any and all steps toward progressive ideas, aid for anyone, and secular government. It is a daily battle in the south.

59% support the passage

40% oppose the passage

Only 1% more in support and it will mirror the vote in the Senate with 40% repubs voting against and 60% voting for. Interesting!
