All the BS about Obama losing Dems. Now we have to worry about independents.

Hogwash. Independents will be back.

10. Hogwash?? Independents determine elections. What will bring
them back? They were against the wars and overwhelmingly wanted a public option. Most people will see little to no effect of health care reform until 2014. I really wish I was as confident as you about our prospects next year.

16. And how many Democrats are switching to independent?...
Edited on Fri Dec-25-09 10:43 PM by cascadiance
Which would distort this survey, as even though the he might still maintain a high favorability of Democrats, if enough of them are leaving the party, and therefore there's a reduced overall number, that would mask the dropoff there too.

The number of independents I was reading in other surveys has been growing quite a bit lately too, which would be from Republicans or Democrats becoming independent.

29. Hmm... i think you are confusing Obama's RATING with number of independent voters sampled...

If you look at other polls, this one claims that the independent voter segment is growing a lot larger and at the Democrats expense more. Now they are calling this a "centrist" growth, but this could also be a misattribution of those leaving the Democrats as independents as "centrist" when in fact they might be some of the core progressives that are discontent.

Like I said, independents drop off after an election.

That was also from a year ago.

Independents choose sides when elections loom.

So what?

The 25% of the country that still viewed him favorably, you don't think that was ~65% of the total Republicans out there?

So as to keep out, John McArmageddon and Sara (we have to get America ready for Jesus) Palin…

Remember those on the left of the left that are now ignored as usual; like the one’s that don't call themselves Dem, Ind, Repugs or Moran; but somehow (I’m assuming but could be wrong) made a huge difference.

they are a far greater danger than Republicans. You will never ever get that 25% or so of nut job Republicans. But the Teabaggers are drawing support from moderate and conservative Democrats and independents.

I don't know anyone who voted for Obama who is "supportive" still. Hanging on and "hoping" there are a few. No one I know is jazzed. I should add that this includes my friends in Hawaii; they are not impressed with his vacation while they are swirling the bowl.

33. Obama is not running in 2010. Members of Congress are.
Y'all better sell this health insurance turkey to the American voters, the majority of whom don't like it. Stop trying to convince us, ProSense. Either people agree with you or they don't. Go out in your community and organize support for it. If you can.

And here's a hint: "Stop whining!" is not an effective talking point.

50. Yeah, they're doing a bang-up job of it.
With polls showing Americans opposing it by about 15 points. Maybe you should step away from the computer and find out how you can help at your local OFA office. Make phone calls to voters in your area. Especially independent ones. Knock on doors. Sell this plan to people. You are doing nothing but engaging in a worthless spam exercise here.

41. Indys are overrated anymore due to the huge drop in Republican ID
Those folks didn't become Democrats and are likely still conservative but just don't want to associate with losers.

We don't need an even split of independents. 2010 will be a base election and fair or not the Administration and Congress needs to find some ways to throw out substantial bones to reignite the base or we'll get rolled. The enthusiasm gap must be bridged, pretend its not there at your nation's peril. The people that are the backbone of GOTV aren't super happy, regardless of polls.

43. meanwhile, according to another of yr graphs, Dem favorability has dropped from ~+15 to ~-15
I don't know how to copy and paste from those Flash graphics, but clicking the Dem & GOP Party tab shows favorable rating of Democratic Party has steadily declined from Jan. 2009. This could mirror the growth of Independents as shown somewhere upthread.
but keep gazing at the ones that YOU like.
