Question about the "ignore" function |
|
Why is there a "you are ignoring the author of this thread" screen?
It would seem to me that if you are ignoring the author of a thread that you should not see their threads at all, therefore there should be no need to have such a screen.
Which gets to the heart of my question: if you find a particular poster to be so odious that you would resort to putting them on ignore, then why must you see their most attention getting threads on the Greatest Page?
Of course you might then want to "hide" a thread from said odious poster that shows up on the Greatest Page, but you are told "you are ignoring the author of this thread" - which makes hiding the thread impossible! Well, unless you take said poster off ignore in order to hide their thread. Then you have to remember to put them back on ignore after you hide the thread!
Proposed solutions:
1. add the "hide thread" "X" box to threads on the Greatest Page (& top 10s) - this would keep the current system, but allow a poster to hide threads from ignored authors (that they can't open anyway!)
2. make it so threads from ignored posters do not show up anywhere while logged in and viewing any forum - including the Greatest Page. Then eliminate the "you are ignoring the author..." screen altogether. This would allow a person to read threads found while searching (either here on DU or through Google), but said threads would simply not show up when surfing DU (obviously now including the Greatest Page.)
I also think it would also reduce some of the ongoing tensions between certain posters. JMHO.

1. We need the "You are ignoring" page because sometimes members arrive at a thread |
|
from somewhere that they are not ignoring. Like a link from another thread. Or the Homepage or Greatest Page.
I agree it would be nice to be able to ignore on the Homepage and Greatest Pages. We did not do it because those pages are fairly server-intensive, and using the ignore feature on those pages would be very difficult to program. Hopefully we can address the problem at some point.
