Suicidal gunman sets Santee home ablaze

SANTEE — A distraught man who told neighbors he was going to kill himself set his Santee home on fire Saturday and then threatened to shoot anyone who came near the burning building, authorities said.

“He told me they’re being kicked out of their home and they were both laid off from their jobs,” Taloza recalled. “They had tried for a lower loan rate and were denied.”

He also told her his wife was sick with cancer. Their conversation ended, and he closed the garage door.

5. It's okay.
The stock market is up to almost 12,000 so the recovery is in full swing and Obama's health care reform will make sure everyone has insurance. There's nothing to worry about. I don't know why this guy just didn't get it. :sarcasm: of bitterest and most angry kind.

10. Yeah, I was thinking the same. If you listen to MSM everything is just perfect, all
the problems are doing fine, stock investing will be great and only the lazy are really out of work. This country is a la la land and many bury their heads in the sand unless it hits them smack in the nose, otherwise, for many, it's the other guys fault.

7. It's a crime how nonchalant we were about focusing on jobs.

9. He apparently called 911 and informed them he shot his wife
and was going to start the fire and kill himself.
They apparently found the wife's body before sunset; they'll continue looking for his tomorrow.
So sad, they both lost their jobs - and medical benefits, she had cancer, and the bank was foreclosing on them after denying a loan modifications.
This is starting to hit close to home...
We used to live nearby in Lakeside until 2005; that neighborhood is a fairly new development (I think I saw them being built on the old Fanita Ranch property in 1999/2000); shoulder to shoulder cookie-cutter 3-5 bedroom 1500 sq ft and up "family homes" with HOA supplied landscaping targeted at middle management, career military(senior enlisted, usually) and/or contractor types - that were going for $600 - $700K five years ago. I've lots of co-workers that buy that sort of house to raise their kids in, telling me they'd plan to sell once the last kid is in college and downsize. That's the way they expected they were supposed to live when they got to the middle of their careers; an established family in a comfortable large house in the suburbs.
One of my old shipyard PMs bought his "brand new house" on that very street in 2001 for around $250K. Whether or not they later on got suckered into a Countrywide toxic "2nd mortgage" loan to use their house equity pay for the kid's college, thinking they were in a secure position in life and they could pay it off with less sacrifice than saddling the kids with student loan debt -
well, I hope it's not him. :(
