Cut the cord to directv and found some interesting things |
|
We recently cut the cord to directv and now have a roku internet streaming box and an off air antenna. Besides the natural feeling of somehow being in withdrawl a bit, we are not completely cut off of course.... i understand that. we have netflix and a free trial of hulu plus but it still feels weird.
I have found out a few interesting things... first, fixed noise is EVERYWHERE> i can get it through the roku. i think they have a channel at the channel store. I can get it through playon which basically streams from my computer to my roku and my tv or playstation or xbox or wii to a tv. That bothers me. i can get msnbc through the playon but they do not have a channel at the channel store.
also Bob was flipping through the off air channels and we get CTV out of canada. It is snowy and not that great a signal, but I was surprised to see Jon Stewart on at 12am.... They have the daily show and colbert on an over the air tv station in canada. not cable. over the air!! i know you canadians already knew that but i didn't.
thanks for humoring me.

2. got a free month trial doesn't have everything you can watch on the computer |
|
but it does have a lot. i am discovering shows i have never watched before. watched something called 'lie to me' yesterday. i think i will be watching more of that. has a lot of current shows, like 'no ordinary family' and 'dancing with the stars' and many more. we got a free month trial when we bought the roku. you can get 1 or two weeks i saw online to try it out. you can watch it on ipod, other devices. even if we did that and the netflix it would still be only $20/mo which is still a lot less than we were paying. i wish they had some of my usa shows, but i can find them elsewhere i guess.

You can watch the first 2 seasons of this on Netflix streaming, in case you didn't already know. :)

|
find online for free. i figured yesterday... we were watching what was available before. we are doing that now. kids have been watching a lot of netflix... pink panther and stuff. they aren't allowed to watch a lot of stuff anyway. there is a 24 hour cartoon channel we get on the off air antenna.... qubo. he man is on at 11 at night. i definitely think we will be just fine. i am also liking that pandora music channel....

6. Cut the cord to Dish months ago, over the air only since, but got a Blu Ray player with streaming |
|
yesterday. Will hook it up tonight or tomorrow. Have a netflix acct, plus I'll get many free channels from Sony's Bravia online selection. With the OTA stuff, I still had access to network programs, and some good reruns of classic shows. Can't wait 'till I get the whole thing set up with the blu ray player. But the GREAT thing is, I'll have gone from $60 a month to $10 a month (netflix) and still have a decent selection of programming. Sure, I miss MSNBC, and SciFi, and I don't know when I'll be able to watch AMC's "Walking Dead," but the savings outweigh those drawbacks, especially when I can grab most of that content via the computer (like through justin.tv).

8. Yeah, you can. I was just watching MSNBC live on justin.tv - |
|
Someone on DU clued me into that site a while back - register, search the channel you want to watch, live, and boom, there it is.
that's what I was trying to say...
You know, I loved Dish when I had it, but I can't believe there is such a workable, far cheaper alternative.

13. Do a search online for "Walking Dead streaming online" |
|
There are several sites that have the entire 6 episode run you can watch for free. I don't know how legal the sites are or if they will be around long but I watched the entire series online and it was freakin' awesome.

9. Oh wow, just hooked up my streaming blu ray player - this is gonna be fun! |
|
Took just a few minutes, now I have streaming Netflix and a ton of other stuff for free, plus access to HULUplus and pay per view stuff. Right now listening to an excellent hard rock station on Slacker - for free!
I have to wonder how long this will stay as inexpensive as it is...right now, it's crazy, who needs cable or satellite?

10. i worry about the net neutrality issue and roadrunner being able to screw with us |
|
and our non cable stuff. i agree at some point they are going to make it harder than getting cable.

I did the same thing a few weeks ago, just cut off my cable and use AppleTV. There's so much you can stream on Netflix, and I can listen to CSPAN radio on the computer. I haven't missed having cable at all.

12. If you haven't discovered it already, |
|
check out Pandora. I'm ENAMORED with it. For the uninitiated, you type in an artist or song name and it will create a channel with that artist/song and artists/songs that are in the same genre. The cool thing is I've typed in the most obscure things and they've had ALL of them. Example: Fever Tree, Fairport Convention, Maddy Prior, John Pryne . . . It's amazing! I'm currently listening to "Blind Faith" radio, listening to "Tales of Brave Ulysses."

14. i LOVE pandora!! i put it on the other day to play christmas music. |
|
it was great! just wish i could get it out in the kitchen area. but our bohemoth is an old tv that doesn't get a digital signal. so currently it is a 'big montitor' as my husband says. but that pandora is awesome. you can play it on the computer but it will stop every once in a while and ask if you are still listening. plus it has commercials (which is fine the radio has commercials too). i am not sure if the on on the tv has commercials. i didn't hear any.
