2. The times have gotten very hard for underground comics ...
... mostly because times have gotten very hard for alternative newspapers. The papers, lacking funds, drop the comics, leaving them without the income source and exposure that could build enough of a following to actually sell a comic book.

Also, much of the same spirit inherent in underground comix moved to other media outlets, like Adult Swim, or the internet, for instance. There's more of the irreverent underground comix mentality around than ever before, apart from just the print versions. If you JUST want the print medium, you just have to look for it. Michael Kupperman, for example, is a favorite.

7. I didn't know Zippy was still around!
Centuries ago we used to travel around the country in a a '67 VW Campmobile that was named Zippy. It had a picture of Zippy the Pinhead on the ceiling vent.
