There are some sick people out there
My daughter's puppy got out of the yard.
"Someone" called the number on the tag and told her that they would give the puppy back, but wanted a reward. WTF is wrong with people?
My daughter works two jobs and barely has enough to pay her bills. She doesn't have the money to pay ransom on a dog.
She went to the address with a friend of hers who has a dad of dubious character.
When they saw her friend...all of the sudden they didn't have the puppy.
My daughter found someone she knew who said that the puppy was dumped on the other side of town--but wouldn't say by who. The dog would have NEVER found her way home.:(
She did find her dog but I sincerely hope these folks who tried to extort money from a hard-working kid have horrible things happen to them. I am getting so fucking tired of mean people.

puppy or any animal. I am glad your daughter got her puppy back, one thing you might think about is the chip implant for the puppy.

the yard on its own?
Around here dogs have been known to disappear from yards. Some are "found" after an ad with a reward is posted, some are dropped off miles from home for no reason and some are never found. Had one little guy show up here from a different state. He was a good 30 miles from home and with hard looking and luck the owners found him. We held on to him and placed a found ad in the paper. Finally gave him to a cousin (he was a Jack Russell and she loves them)after a month. Two weeks later we got a call about him. They just happened to be in the county and just happened on an old newspaper with our found ad. They were happily reunited. Someone grabbed him out of his yard and was seen. The man tried chasing down the car but lost it. No one ever did find out why he was taken.

I don't leave my dogs out when I'm not home. Though doubt anyone is going to try going through the very territorial GSD but still bring them in when gone and keep an eye on them when they are out.

When I was about 6 our Dachshund got lost. Some jerk picked her up and put her with a bunch of dogs with distemper. I've hated stupid people since~

7. That is horrible!
Thank goodness your daughter got her puppy back!

I know how distressing this must have been; I lost my dog for a week years ago. The person who picked him up on a rainy day took him home & took good care of him for 4 days, & didn't want the $100 I gave her, so there are some good people out there, too. It was worth every penny to get him back.

Sorry you had such a terrible person to deal with. I learned in my search for my dog that there are too many who think of pets as just animals.

My mother's service dog, a Golden Retriever, got away from her one night. She did get the dog back but someone had put a cigarette burn on the dog's muzzle. Sick people out there indeed.

10. 1. I'm glad she got her pup back. 2. I'm glad she brought a friend.
Robberies and rapes start this way. Someone "obtains" a dog (or purse, or cellphone or ???) and offers to return it (reward or otherwise). They make you go to them, not vice versa. You are now in unknown territory, and alone.

Never go alone. Always bring a friend. Dubious is good. Dubious and big is better. Dubious and armed is best (sorry gun haters).

12. I'm just so happy she got her dog back. Several years back
someone saw a couple of women take my cousin's Pomeranian out of her yard. After my cousin posted a reward the two women brought the dog back claiming they "found" her. My cousin knew better but paid them anyway because she was afraid if she didn't she wouldn't get her dog back. It was nothing but theft, pure and simple.

I've been used as the 'dubious' friend before. I'm 6'+ 220lbs, long hair, red beard and look as though I just stepped out of Norse sagas. I agree with the other posters in recommending that people go with friend(s) in these situations, it's just safer.

As for those that take pets in order to extort money - May Geri and Fricke (Odin's wolves) deal with them, harshly.

our country's population is fucked up. 1 in 4 people have sociopath tendancies..that number is rising and I fear it will come down to we are living among monsters, wtf do we do to STOP them.

Jail, rehab, appeasing, therapy, forced labor, punishment, etc.etc. Does nothing to stop them. You cannot grow a conscience if you cannot feel love or remorse. It's really this stark, either you care or you are not caring but can FAKE caring to people that would fall for it and would let you go on... Soon we won't be able to afford to high security babysit the real criminals while tons of people with minor pot charges fill jails and parole boards are manipulated into providing a free labor pool for corporate greedy thugs, while the real sociopaths get out too easy and manage to succor pity from the stupid....the only thing that can really stop them is a grave.Sad, but that is the truth.

Soon if we keep pretending the abuses going on aren't happening we won't have the luxury to pretend that killing a creep who beats dogs for jollies and rapes kids, and robs old ladies and beats them up over and over, makes us become a sociopath.

Truth is killing a sociopath does NOT make any non-sociopath person become a sociopath themselves. IT CAN'T.

This stupid false equivalency is a popular false equivalency problem. It has made our culture incapable of real justice. This stupid false equivalency was brought on by pie-in-the-sky beliefs reinforced by self serving institutions and religions, that has no basis in real life.

This moral mind fuck has made our country so evil it makes non-sociopaths sick to live in it . Evil as in many places kids aren't safe in their own homes, dogs not safe in their own yards..and as long as we let the bullies and sociopaths get away with it,and even REWARD them, they'll keep doing it.We have to make it too COSTLY to the CRIMINAL for them to desire to do the crime be it dog napping, rape, corporate crime or congressional betrayal of the people.

Would a self serving sociopath POS rape a kid if he knew it was a CERTAINTY he would die by the hands of those he harmed?

My cats NEVER go outside unless I'm holding them, and they have a harness and leash on,they are in my arms.I do not trust humanity enough to let them out alone, ever. Why because there are too many goddamn sociopaths among us.

I see any animal abuse I kick that abusers ass after telling them to stop it once.. If it's a kid I'll scare the living shit out of them.I don't stand there wringing my hands.

18. Oddly enough, I believe sex education/contraception
could be a big part of the answer. I get off work at 2:00 pm, and occassionally see a clip of Maury or Jerry Springer - those people are totally FUCKED and I don't think they are the exception. And of course they almost always have children. Kids who are raised by these people are just going to be more of the same, unfortuanately. And they just keep multiplying. Sociopaths, very fertile sociopaths.

Yes...there are some assholes in our country. Yes...there are some sociopaths (I keep hearing Inigo Montoya's voice in my head when people bandy the word 'sociopath' around) in our country - but no where near the amount that you mention.

If you are paranoid about the people around you - so be it. No need to try and spread this.

The world has always been beset by evil people - none of this is new. It just helps some people validate their feelings on current times and the downfall of society.

21. I agree. We actually had a dog napping ring of thugs working our area for awhile a few years ago.
It was pathetic, they would steal the dog and then claim they found it.
It only took a few weeks for the cops to figure out that the same 4 people were finding all of the lost dogs in this town.

And then they asked for a reward to cover their expenses, too.
Which was to pay for the gas they used while they drove around casing all of the houses looking for dogs in the back yards that were small enough for them to steal.

26. Assholes!
I'm so glad to read that the puppy is safe back at home.

And word to the wise: Anyone who happens to lose a pet and puts up posters, places ads, etc., should always leave some details about the animal out of the information. Something that anyone who had found the pet could easily verify - like a marking, etc. Our rescue group has had instances where someone calls saying they've found a pet, but that they won't give the pet's location without a reward. Most times, these idiots do not have the pet in their possession.

If you ask for something verifiable, that is one way, at least, to determine if the callers are for real. Same is try should you find a pet, and have callers wanting to claim the pet. Ask for details to determine if you're speaking to the real owner.

29. Companies that sell animals for experimentation
in research also steal dogs. They especially look for deep chested dogs and beagles. It's quite lucrative. When I was working in the research dept. at a big 10 university a few years ago...animals were quite expensive to purchase.

32. Mean, nasty, hateful and fearful...
We humans are manifesting a level of mental disease that is both frightening and corrosive. Far too many of us are in react mode, driven by inchoate fears and resentments. Far too many of us are willing to pollute our spirits with negativity, eagerly engaging in name-calling and other forms of vilification. Far too many of us are willing to glorify violence or resort to violence, often just for entertainment or personal gratification!

We seldom acknowledge the import of overpopulation, but Calhoun's research with rats has proven that when a critical level of overpopulation occurs, the outcome isn't pretty. With rats, abnormal sexual behavior, hyperaggression, eating their young, and increased mortality are a few of the problems that occurred. With humans, well...isn't it past time we acknowledge that our species has passed a critical tipping point?

When I was younger (and naive) I thought our species was in its adolescence--obsessed with sex, drugs, and all other forms of self-gratification, especially as regards our economic behaviors. However, a thoughtful analysis of the 'dis-ease' of overpopulation has shone a bright light on the consequences of this macro-level manifestation of our species' hedonism. Regardless of how much energy we devote to denying the ravages of overpopulation, they are writ large by our increasingly sophisticated, increasingly corrosive socio-cultural and technological constructs--the very same constructs we use to remain in denial, and to externalize responsibility for our collective hubris.

Bearing this in mind, I feel overwhelmed with disappointment about the choices we (as a collective) have been making, because we seem to be moving inexorably back into 'balance' on a planetary scale. The inevitable consequences of our hedonistic overpopulation and denial of personal responsibility promise to be extreme.

31. I Don't Know What To Say...
This just furthers my belief that the world is absent of any compassion or justice.

As I become older I slowly become more and more joyless. There is very little to smile about anymore. There was a time when I was gleefully ignorant of the true nature of what it is be human. I had my days of joy.
