Schwarzenegger commutes prison sentence for ex-speaker Nunez' son
SACRAMENTO, CA - On his last day in office, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger commuted a voluntary manslaughter prison sentencing Sunday for 21-year-old-Esteban Nunez, son of an ex-Assembly Speaker.
The governor reduced Nunez's maximum sentencing of 16 years for the fatal stabbing of a San Diego college student in 2008, to seven years in prison.
Prosecutors said Nunez, son of former California Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, and co-defendant Ryan Jett, were with two other men on the night of Oct. 4, 2008 when they were refused entry into a party near San Diego State University. The men were accused of attacking and fatally stabbing Luis Santos. Two other men with the victim were also stabbed and Nunez eventually admitted he stabbed one of them in the stomach, though not fatal. Jett was accused of fatally stabbing Santos.
In May 2009, Nunez and Jett plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter and assault with a deadly weapon in a plea agreement. Both men were given the maxiumum prison sentence.
...
"Considering Nunez's limited role in the killing and his clean prior criminal record, I believe his sentence is disproportionate in comparison to Jett's," said the governor in a statement. "The lower terms for voluntary masnalughter (three years) and assault with a deadly weapon (two years each) would be more appropriate in light of these differences."
