Senate moving to block President Obama from transferring Gitmo prisoners to the U.S.

Dec 14, 2010

An unreleased draft of a bill expected to pass this month essentially puts a nine-month hold on Guantanamo transfers. That includes Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, who had been slotted for trial in New York before Obama bowed to political resistance and blocked the Justice Department's plans.

Obama could try to find other money to transfer prisoners, but the new law would make that politically untenable.

It already looked as if, in the decade after 9/11, no one would face trial for the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil. The Senate bill would make that a near certainty.

2. I think we should transfer them to the Senate and swear them in.
Couldn't be worse.

3. why does the democratic senate oppose our democratic President?
Obama's not only had to fight the thugs, he's had constant opposition from his own party.

4. since 2008 he's been fighting
. . . for this and his other initiatives. The Democrats in the legislature never got their collective spine together on this one.
