K-9 unit dog kills another dog. Was being walked by family member rather than handler
K-9 Unit Dog And Handler Investigated After Attack

BRENTWOOD, Calif. -- San Leandro police Monday were investigating an incident with a K-9 unit dog that was involved in a deadly attack on another dog over the holidays.

Questions were swirling about who was taking care of the dog when the attack happened.

A popular walking trail in Brentwood was where the owner and his dog crossed paths with another local family walking the off-duty San Leandro police German Shepard on a leash.

"When we were about next to him he started to growl," said pet owner Adam Lovell.

Lovell said in a matter of seconds the German Shepard grabbed his six-year-old Finnish Spitz named Chloe by the tail.

" pretty much just latched on. And I was yelling 'Get your dog off my dog!'" remembered Lovell. 'The person handling the off-duty dog said 'I can't control him! I can't control him!'

------------------------------

Lovell’s dog Chloe was rushed to an emergency vet after being bitten five or six times. The San Leandro police officer in charge of Arago paid for Chloe's vet bills. But two days after the attack, she died from her injuries.

Lt. Jeff Tudor with San Leandro police said the department has rules about who's allowed to handle off-duty police dogs. But he said he couldn't discuss those rules while the investigation into the incident was underway.

here is what a Finnish spitz looks like. I guess it's no match for a German Shepard

1. They're beautiful!!!
My shephard is on the small side at 80 lbs. When she stands on her hind legs, she can put her front paws on my shoulders and look me in the eye. I try to be very careful with her, moreso than my hubby. She will act like a nut (bark, bark, bark and pull on the leash) if we get near other dogs or joggers, even if we have her in her nose harness. I find asking her to do commands (sit, paw, etc.) can help to distract her some. For that reason, my hubby, myself and sometimes our teen daughter are the only ones who walk the dog. My 10yo son only weighs in at 78 lbs. Although Noelle listens to him when he gives her commands, I'm sure she wouldn't listen in the heat of the moment if she saw something outside she wanted (squirrel, cat, etc.).

I think it was irresponsible for the police officer to let someone else walk the dog, especially knowing they're trained only to take commands from their masters.

Such a shame for the other doggy and owner :(

3. Would he let another family member use his service pistol?
Same thing...these dogs are highly trained and dangerous (when they need to be) and just about the only person they will listen to is their dedicated handler.

The guy at the very least should be taken off the K9 unit.
