17. The rain from a weak storm would be welcome
We've been under a Red Flag warning for over a month even immediately after getting rain. We probably got a quarter of an inch the other day which perked up the grass for one day. But with 90+ temps that little bit of moisture is already gone and the grass is getting crackly.

Boatus.com is not tracking that one yet - that is the site I have used for past hurricane seasons.

30. My grass is looking bad. I've only had to mow once so far. Not much
rain has been happening in my neighborhood. NOAA doesn't give me much hope for this system, either.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK
NWS NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER
MIAMI FL

800 AM EDT WED JUN 1 2011 FOR THE NORTH ATLANTIC...CARIBBEAN SEA AND THE GULF OF MEXICO... 1. A SMALL AREA OF LOW PRESSURE LOCATED ABOUT 200 MILES EAST OF JACKSONVILLE FLORIDA IS MOVING WEST-SOUTHWESTWARD AT AROUND 20 MPH. THE LOW CONTINUES TO PRODUCE A CONCENTRATED AREA OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS...AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS ARE MARGINALLY FAVORABLE FOR SOME DEVELOPMENT OF THIS SYSTEM BEFORE IT MOVES OVER NORTHERN FLORIDA LATER TODAY. REGARDLESS OF DEVELOPMENT...THIS DISTURBANCE COULD PRODUCE LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL AND STRONG GUSTY WINDS OVER PORTIONS OF THE FLORIDA PENINSULA. THERE IS A MEDIUM CHANCE...30 PERCENT...OF THIS SYSTEM BECOMING A TROPICAL CYCLONE DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS

Well it should be at most a Tropical Storm as it crosses Florida.

10. Don't worry the rain heading towards Haiti, Cuba, JA
and Central America will probably do more damage than the tropical storm across Florida. And guess what - we need the rain big time.
Expect mudslides between now and weekend somewhere in one or more of these countries.

35. I'd love to converse with a meteorologist about this, though.
Would a bunch of small storms in the beginning better regulate the surface sea temperatures (SST) and possibly prevent later formation of the bigger storms already predicted for the season?

Keep the SST low and we won't have to worry about much :hi:

6. I read recently this is forecast to be a bad season ...
As many as three major hurricanes, with 13 or 14 named storms.

Batten down the hatches!

Sorry I don't have a link at hand.

landfall on any part of the US coast.

edited to add:

http://www.usatoday.com/weather/storms/hurricanes/2010-11-29-hurricanes29_ST_N.htm

For the first time in recorded history, 12 hurricanes formed this year in the Atlantic basin without a single one making landfall in the United States, according to experts at Colorado State University.

According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, 19 named storms — tropical storms (which have sustained winds of at least 39 mph) and hurricanes (74 mph) — formed this year, including the 12 hurricanes. Five of the hurricanes were major, a Category 3 or higher, with wind speeds of at least 111 mph.

An average season sees 10 named storms, of which six are hurricanes and two are major hurricanes.

Since 1944, only two other years had as many named storms: 1995 had 19 storms, and 2005 had 28.

11. I always have mixed feelings this time of year
No reasonable person likes to see death and destruction. I get that, and I agree.

Yet...

If we were able to take the death and destruction factor out of it, hurricanes are actually quite beautiful. Well, I think so anyway. I'm fascinated by their awesome power...how they're born and how they die. Where they go...the amounts of water they can hold and then let go.

Dangerous yet awesome.

it's a dilemma.

:(

In any event, I hope people stay safe this hurricane season.

36. One of my duty stations during my Navy career was with a weather
recon squadron in Guam. I flew as flight engineer on WC 121 aircraft (this was in the 1968 - 71 time frame, ahd the planes were fairly old then.)

We entered the storm (typhoon) at 1000 feet, flew into the eye, circled upward and departed when we exited the eye at the top. Then, we loitered a little away from the storm, and repeated it 6 hours later. We did this at midnight, and 6 AM. The 6 AM penetration and exit were beautiful - popping out into a clear sky with the storm clouds below us.

If I were due experiences, those were certainly some of them!

The weather has been just too crazy across the world. I always feel guilty wishing for the storms to miss me, as I know that it will likely hit someone else if it does.

18. New England is overdue for one, I believe
Since Hurricane Bob in 1991, we've gotten some "leftovers" from hurricanes that pooped out over land, and not a whole lot of damage was done.

We've dodged a bunch of bullets, but we're going to be hit eventually...

19. Have to stock up emergency supplies
I'm low on batteries and candles.

Got charcoal so we can cook on the grills. Will have to see about extra water for drinking and cooking. I'm on a well and I usually fill up the tub for flushing the toilet.

Shaping up to be another blistering summer here.

38. Have you looked at the computer model tracks?
I'm looking at StormPulse and one of the tracks makes it look like some akin to Tropical Storm Allison. Yeah, like we need two-thirds of our annual rainfall in a couple of days...

One track does take it well south of the Texas coast, though that might not bode well for Northern Mexico as it would have even more time (and warm waters) to build and strengthen.

40. You're welcome :)
I wouldn't say I'm a weather junky per se, but I do look at some of the satellite imagery on NOAA, especially the water vapor images as I feel that's one of the most telling sources for potential storm formation. It doesn't include all the other pertinent information, like wind shear and such, so it's just one part of the whole picture.

I just discovered today that StormPulse includes the satellite animations if you click the "Atlantic Satellites" button on. It's pretty cool :)
