Lodi (CA) school employees protest pay cuts to reimburse teachers
LODI, CA - Hundreds of school custodians, cafeteria workers, secretaries, and security personnel attended a Lodi Unified School District meeting Tuesday night, to protest new pay cuts for classified employees.

The pay cuts, based on hours worked, will pay back teachers and administrative staff who took pay hits from last year's furloughs.

The California School Employees Association (CSEA) said the pay cuts are not only unfair, but unnecessary. Union leaders said the superintendent's plan ignores the $5.88 million in "fairshare" budget reductions resulting from laying off classified employees in June 2010.

"I was shocked and horrified by the resolution," said Laura Baker, a full-time security supervisor. "They took a lot from us already. I will need to get a second or third job if this goes forward."

The CSEA said if employees factor in the lowest priced health insurance costs, the final paycheck for many would be inadequate to maintain their lifestyle. According to a CSEA chart, an employee working eight hours per week, has a monthly salary of $3,099.20. After a proposed 27 percent pay cut and taking out insurance costs, the employee will now be getting a $1,972.11 paycheck.

1. As they should.
The licensed association should not be willing to be reimbursed on their co-workers backs. The two groups need to stand together, to be united in working to prevent further lay offs, and erosions of salary and benefits.

I'm glad that it's working that way in my district.

2. Betcha the school superintendent didn't take no steenking pay cut
From his north of $200k annual salary guaranteed by a multi year contract.

It's not OK to be pissed at public employees unless you are pissed at the ones who make the rest of us look bad.
