Texas on the Brink - 2011 report on TX state rankings in everything. ( It's bad.)
http://texaslsg.org/texasonthebrink/

Browse the many catagories under the On the Brink tab. Perry's actually going to run on this???

A sample - Texas ranks:
44th in Home Ownership
46th in Homeowner’s Insurance Affordability
4th in Percent Living Below Federal Poverty Level
2nd in Percent of Population with Food Insecurity
50th in Workers’ Compensation Coverage

A 2009 study found that Texas requires families in the bottom 20 percent of the income scale to pay more than three-and-a-half times as great a share of their earnings in taxes as the top one percent.

No Medicaid is provided to a family of four, even at the poverty level of $4,943.70/ year.

4. Look at "taxation" tab, not just "state taxes" It's deceiving.

Revenue raised per capita 46th

BUT

According to Americans for Prosperity, local government debt in Texas is over $175 billion.

One of the 10 most regressive tax systems in the nation.

3. This is the model the Republicans plan for the entire country.
What do you thing Union Busting is all about?? Yes, making
every state a RIGHT TO WORK STATE. Therefore every state
will be Business Friendly meaning Businesses can pay as low
salaries and offer as few benefits as they wish. The Stetes
can compete with each other offering "cheapest labor".

7. We could then compete with 3rd world countries
Cheapest labor rate? Lets see... Vietnam or Texas? Bangaladesh or Texas? Hmm... Texas comes pretty close. Good for business!!!

15. Under the Republicans' agenda for "prosperity"
those are the only countries we'll be able to compete with.

11. This indeed is the Republican model and mantra. Yet some have not come to grips with the blatant
fascism inherent in the entire pub scheme. :patriot:

10. what is that medicaid number?

is that 4,943.00 per person (20K for household).

is that a typo and should read 49,437.00 per household of four?

because I'm pretty sure Texas has medicaid for a family of four with only 4,943.00 in income. Could be wrong, but I don't think I am.

18. Parent doesn't qualify, but kids do?
Edited on Mon Jun-20-11 12:52 PM by spedtr90
I could be wrong. What do you think?

Another Texas Medicaid site had this: (The 27% for a working parent is there)
________________________________________________________________________________
Category Income eligibility (as percent of federal poverty level)
________________________________________________________________________________

Infant 185%
Child 1-5 133%
Child 6-19 100%
Non-Working Parent 13%
Working Parent 27%
Pregnant woman 185%
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Below is what On the Brink says about Medicaid - and 27% of $18,310 would be $4,943.70.

*Texas does not provide Medicaid to parents making even
poverty level incomes; therefore, a working parent of two does not qualify for coverage if he or she makes more than $4,943.70 in a year.

*A working parent in Texas is eligible for Medicaid if his or her income does not exceed 27 percent of the federal poverty level (FPL). The FPL for a family of 3 is $18,310.

22. ah, thanks. that's beyond fucked up.

apparently here in Texas, the word "poverty" isn't nearly degrading enough. We like our poor people to have open festering wounds.

13. Politics in TX is pretty bad...
Regarding the tax thing, part of that is because there's no state income tax, but there is a substantial sales tax. As we know, sales taxes are generally regressive, while income taxes are progressive.

14. I hate the politics of Texas and I'm sure a lot of people do too
but it seems like a lot of people, despite its faults, are moving there. It gained like 5 million people over the last ten years. Texas must be doing something right to attract people.

26. A (the) major driver of population growth is Hispanic population.
The thing to always remember about the Texas demographics is that it's 38% Latino. That's also where most of population growth has been taking place. These demographic trends are unlikely to change, so if the teabaggers keep up their anti-immigrant racism (don't see that changing either...), there's a chance Texas could go blue sometime in the coming decades.

Article on population growth in Texas.

16. First state to return to feudalism.
Given its history and political orientation--staunch wild west anti-government corporatism--I would fully expect Texas to be a leader in the disappearance of the middle class.

23. I caught a report on Good Morning America about Perry running for president.
They said Texas' economy was booming. They even had a graphic with the words "Texas Economy Booming" to reinforce this lie. I just checked their website and they have this in their report.

"Perry would instantly be a formidable candidate for the Republican ticket, as he is the longest-serving governor in the country. And unlike the rest of the U.S., the Texas economy has been booming."

ABC loves Perry. They will tell any lie necessary to catapult the propaganda for him.
