Let's Be Clear: Wal-Mart Is A Scar On The Country

by Jonathan Tasini
Monday 20 of June, 2011

Keep our eye on the ball. I'm sure the Waltons are doing a great dance over in Bentonville, Arkansas in light of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling blocking a class-action suit against the companythat, had it been successful, would have likely cost the company billions of dollars in damages. But, let's be clear: Wal-Mart is a scar on the country.

On the case itself, just let it be said that the ruling does not say Wal-Mart did not discriminate. It simply said that the plaintiffs could not prove that they shared common characteristics that would make them eligible to pursue the case as a class-action suit. that isn't a trivial matter, to be sure--it would be almost impossible, cost-wise, for the hundreds of thousands of women who were harmed by discrimination to pursue these cases individually.

But, the record is also clear that:

Wal-Mart is a habitual violator of wage-and-hour laws and a whole host of other workplace standards.

The company is viciously anti-union, which has essentially forced the United Food and Commercial Workers to turn to a non-traditional way of organizing the workers. ............(more)

2. what's worse...
when you are on a fixed income and your kids need shoes or something cheap, it is a godsend.

ya, i know they are evil...but who can afford $20+ for a kids bathing suit at jc penney or such?
it was hard enough to come up with the $10 for my daughter's new suit this year, she's grown 2 sizes since last summer and we are on the fringe

so while i appreciate the evil corporation concept...poverty and reality wins in my world

8. and after they run all the little stores out of your small town
where else can you go? 100 mile round trip to the big city at $4/gallon.

12. well, it is already a drive to the city...
like i said, we rarely 'go shopping' but i happened to be in town visiting my sister and had $20 on me...

used what I had left to gas up at a cheaper rate than in my hometown

and walmart has had nothing to do with our businesses drying up, it's been in steady decline since 2008.
and we are losing population and businesses every month, no jobs, no money, foreclosures, etc...

is it any wonder I have been unemployed for 2+ years?

things are not getting better anywhere, expect more of the same...walmart or not

3. Ushered in with the help of the Clintons.
Dame Hillary was on the board for 6 years.
A fact conveniently left out of her biography during her campaign.
Hubby Bill was extremely helpful too with his WTO, NAFTA and other policies.

6. Not only in the US, WalMart is a scar worldwide...
by forcing their sweatshop suppliers overseas to "cut costs" even more if they want WM's business. They're truly evil. I'm sure ol' Sam would be repelled by what his company has become.

Sometimes some dumb ideas are expressed here, but that's one of the worst.

19. I can't disagree, but I primarily shop there.
Edited on Tue Jun-21-11 01:43 AM by Akoto
I live on SSI, and my food stamp allotment is only $107 for the month, so I really have to stretch every penny of what's left after paying rent. I just can't do that at other places. Once in a while, I'll get something from Publix, but that's typically a splurge.

Everything the author of the article says is true. Actually, there are some things he didn't post that Walmart does that would make you guys hate the place more.
