Chocolate maker buys Jenny Craig

Nestle swallows Jenny Craig
December 14, 2010

Nestle, the company behind calorie-rich Smarties, Chokito and Fantales, has announced it will soon take over the weight-loss organisation Jenny Craig.

The chocolatier and multinational food company said it would acquire, at an undisclosed price, all shares of the group that controls the Jenny Craig franchise in Australia and New Zealand.

The acquisition next month will complete Nestle's takeover of Jenny Craig, a process which began in 2006 with the US$600 million ($600 million) buy-out of its international arm.

The weight-loss company was founded in Australia in 1983 and so it was fitting to reunite it with the growing international business, Jenny Craig chief executive Patti Larchet said on Tuesday. .........(more)

1. There's a joke here somewhere, I'm sure of it.
Eat our chocolate then sign up for JC and lose our chocolate.

Ah, nevermind - I'll let the true DU comedians have at it.

3. It's actually a pretty smart move...
Fatten em' up for 20 years...

Then pimp your program to De' fatten them- get paid on both ends = win-win

We REALLY need some cooking classes back in schools. With all the corporate farming, people just don't know how to cook from scratch, and healthy. Even compared to say 30 years ago. This and our sedentary lifestyles are the reason we are FAT nation.

Every person who graduates high school should have had to kill, clean, and cook a chicken to recieve a scholarship. That would be a start

6. I avoid ANYTHING Nestle. They're still killing babies in 3rd world countries.
They aren't as disgusting about it as they used to be when they would send in representatives dressed as doctors and nurses to convince women their formula was better than breast milk. But they still push it on the hospitals and put enormous effort into getting new mothers hooked on formula so their own milk will dry up. After the "free samples" (read: "hook drugs") run out, they find that the formula is too fucking expensive and end up stretching it by watering it down. It is bad enough that the water they are using is often unsafe by any standard. Countless children have died from malnutrition as a direct result of Nestle's activities when a perfectly healthy and cheap source of excellent nutrition was already available - breast milk. But hey, at least they make a shitload of money killing babies.

7. Just watched a documentary yesterday about child labor
and cocoa bean farming in Africa. Put it this way - there's an excellent chance that a portion of the beans Nestle uses for its chocolate comes from farms that use child trafficking and child slavery.
Nestle sucks.

9. Unfortunately, Hershey and Mars are guilty of that as well - that's where the beans come from.
I wouldn't put it past Nestle to SEEK OUT farms that exploit children, but child labor in general is a given in the cocoa bean world.

8. I used to work for Nestle'
from 1971 to 1977, when they were in White Plains, New York.

They were the most insensitive, unfeeling, corrupt company I've ever worked for. I stayed there for various personal reasons. but I hated every day I was there.

To this day, I will not buy ANY Nestle' product.

10. That was about the height of their "nurse maid" activities.
Strong boycott efforts in the mid 80's got them to drop the doctor and nurse costumes, but it really didn't change a damn thing they were doing.
