What You Can't Measure with a Test
Fantastic editorial written by a high school Language Arts teacher from Corvallis, Oregon:

http://www.oregonlive.com/opinion/index.ssf/2011/01/what_you_cant_measure_with_a_t.html

She compares the current testing and data mania with Mr. Gradgrind's school in Dickens' Hard Times. The parallels and similarities between a work of literature from the 1800s and our contemporary reality are almost frightening.

2. Outstanding analogy
We seem to be returning to a Dickens culture as our middle class dies. And it's heartbreaking if you pay attention and watch this evolve.

3. When you think about it, there's a lot of Dickensian stuff going on these days.
And not just in education!

Still, Dickens' presentation of children as still more cogs in the process of industrialization is strikingly similar to what is happening these days, with business and corporate entities muscling their way into public education.
