Was told yesterday I have emphysema so I'm going to be here alot. |
|
Have to quit smoking and I'm spending a great deal of time here in an effort to pass the time away. I'm on 100% disability as of last October so I no longer work.
Been enjoying reading all the threads and getting involved in some of the discussions. I just want to debate to possibly learn more about any subject and if I seem snarky, it's because I'm rather strung tight from severely cutting back on the smoking (I normally smoke more then two packs a day and I've had fewer then 10 so far) and no ill will is intended for anyone here.
On the bright side, I did think the close to 100 mph trip in a state police car to the hospital yesterday was pretty cool. I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't felt like I was suffocating and dieing. Last time I was in a police car, I was in the back seat wearing handcuffs and on my way to jail.

Lost the race was was awarded the booby prize. 6 days in jail. That was years ago when they were alot less tough on drunk driving.

4. Here's a real pat on the back. My Dad did what you are doing about 50 years ago. |
|
And it helped him greatly. He's "gone" now, but died at 89 years old, after a diagnosis of emphysema when I was a little kid.
You might want to pick a subject of somesort and work on becoming an "expert" and sharing with us, since you're going to be here a lot.
I like to debate too!!! But many people around here need to learn that you ONLY hurt your case when you're impolite.
Hang in there, Kaleva! See you around . . .

5. DU has a quit smoking forum (if you're unaware of it) so |
|
definitely visit there as you're hanging around.
So sorry to hear of your diagnosis. My dad was a doctor and one of the most sobering things he said to me (after hammering at me for years to stop smoking) "it's not just the lung cancer, Mary Ellen, it's the emphysema that's just as debilitating". :(

Every time you want a cigarette eat a quarter of a fruit. You'd be surprised how quickly you quit.

13. Lotsa luck on quitting the smokes… |
|
was smoking two packs a day when I quit. Believe it or not sunflower seeds helped me; when I craved a smoke I would instead grab a few seeds and pop them in my mouth.
Of course if you work in a office I guess they would frown on sunflower shells all over the floor. Might want to consider joining a gym as well, gonna pack on some weight, besides heavy breathing is good for your lungs when you have emphysema.

quitting smoking. My dearly departed mother-in-law suffered from emphysema. I believe her pulmonologist took a too-conservative approach with medication and supplemental oxygen therapy. We later found out that she would have been an ideal candidate for lung volume reduction surgery based upon the location(s) of lobes that were damaged. My boss's dad had a different doctor who offered the lung reduction surgery. What a difference in the quality of life! He was so much more mobile and healthy than my mother-in-law, plus he lived to age 91, so it isn't as if the surgery was a failure. It was the difference between her staying home and having help with everything and him traveling, doing yardwork, and having vigor. She was unable to shake off pneumonia, and he just had the ability to cough out infection. If your doctor doesn't discuss the issue of lung volume reduction with you, bring it up. Your problem may not be in the same lobes as my mother-in-law and boss's dad, but it might be.

17. You can do it....it's almost 2 years now that I quite....after 50 years |

I am surprised you still have the desire to smoke. I am lucky, being unable to breath took the desire away from me. Thankfully, now with the help of acupuncture, herbs and exercise, I can breath pretty well most the time, but I am still delicate when exposed to smoke, excess dust. I know how it is, you can't concentrate and are on edge all the time. I avoided the regular MD route. More chemicals seems to be that way.
I found thinking of the additives and corporate profits helped me stop. If you could get a nice clean tobacco and smoke it the way the natives did, it would be different, but we can't we get that damned adulterated crap with who knows what in it.
Good luck

20. My doctor told me I had a touch of emphysema |
|
about 7 years ago and I am still smoking. The only time it bothers me is in the summer when the hot air is stifling and I have to walk a distance, and then I am out of breath. I am 72 years old and I see no need to quit now. I like to smoke and if it gets me, I will die happy with my cigarettes in hand.

Edited on Tue Jun-28-11 08:01 PM by woo me with science
I don't know if it could help or not. I wonder if anyone here knows.
I am very sorry to hear about your diagnosis and wish you strength in quitting. I hope DU helps. I have heard that you can lessen any suffering in other parts of your body by hitting your hand hard with a hammer...I guess it's possible that posting in GD or GD: P can offer a similar effect.
Seriously, good luck to you.

27. I got one of those last year |
|
I still smoke, but I can't find a local place that sells the atomizers I need. But anyway, I bought a Pure Smoke and I would re-use the filters, but best of all I could use Tasty Puff flavors. I found Root Beer is best. You can order it online if they aren't in a cigarette store. I am unemployed right now, and I moved to Bakersfield a few months ago and I still don't know my way around here. Hopefully when I get a job I will be able to buy a new atomizer online at their site.
The flavor helps, and I still need to quit myself. I have been smoking over 30 years. But when I lived in a place where I couldn't smoke indoors it helped me not go out and smoke for hours. To re-use the filters, you need more liquid nicotine. Either flavored or not. I don't smoke Menthol, so I have no idea how they taste.

As for quitting, if you feel your resolve weakening, rub the inside of one of your windows with a paper towel and then smell it.
That should do it.
