Congresswoman Giffords is the new Fort Sumter.
Edited on Sat Jan-08-11 03:00 PM by Pab Sungenis
I've been laying low lately due to the toxic atmosphere that's grown up here on DU, but today's events need to be commented upon. So let me repost my recent blog entry then slip back into the shadows.

My heart goes out to all of the victims today.

150 years ago a group of "Conservatives" who weren’t happy with the outcome of an election took matters into their own hands and started shooting.

Today, the exact same thing happened.

On April 12, 1861, the "Conservatives" knew exactly what they were doing. They knew that opening fire on Fort Sumter would bring about a civil war. And they did it because civil war was exactly what they wanted.

And the shooter of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords this morning in Arizona most likely knew the same thing. And once again civil war was what they wanted. And if we don’t give the Tea Party either total capitulation or open warfare, they will keep doing it until we acquiesce.

Make no mistake, this was not a random event. This wasn’t even standard political assassination. This was an act of civil war by a political movement every bit as misguided, intractable, and dangerous as the Confederacy was.

Many of us saw this coming; she had been targetted before. Congresswoman Giffords’ offices were vandalized during last year’s health care debate, around the time that a teabagger tried to blow up the house of the brother of another Democratic Congressman. Her teabagger opponent last year ran an ad that bordered on calling for assassination. Giffords was also on Sarah Palin’s infamous hit list last fall, where she " a bull’s-eye on 20 House districts."

And let’s not forget Sharron Angle’s famous "Second Amendment Remedies…."

"If this Congress keeps going the way it is, people are really looking toward those Second Amendment remedies and saying my goodness what can we do to turn this country around? I’ll tell you the first thing we need to do is take Harry Reid out."

Well, Sharron, you didn’t get your complete wish in that Harry Reid wasn’t the first one taken out. Another Democratic Congresswoman who voted for the Health Care Bill was. But you did get part of it. A teabagger undid the results of an election with your “Second Amendment Remedy.”

You wanted war, and you got it.

The scary thing is that this time the Civil War won’t be along geographic lines. There are no safe places for anyone.

So what happens next? No one can know. But I can tell you this: if you’re a liberal, arm yourself and watch your back, because the teabaggers have moved from harsh words to open rebellion. And they’ve just proven that they’re not afraid to kill.

3. Try to step back and relax first
An initial call to arms isn't going to help matters. Let's get the facts.

5. "laying low lately due to the toxic atmosphere that's grown up here on DU"

We would do well to wait just a few short hours to get just a few factual details before fighting the Civil War again.

Cheers!

7. unrec. she's a person who's either dead or fighting for her life
she's not a fucking monument or symbol and she shouldn't be held up as such until we know the facts.

9. Easy there. Let's wait for all the facts before we start declaring civil war.
