New Arizona gun law allows concealed weapons without permit
by Joan McCarter
Sat Jan 08, 2011 at 12:12:17 PM PST

In horrific timing, Arizona govenor Jan Brewer just signed a new law lifting restrictions on concealed weapons.

PHOENIX — Favoring the constitutional right to bear arms over others' concerns about gun safety, Gov. Jan Brewer on Friday signed into law a bill making Arizona the third state allowing people to carry a concealed weapon without requiring a permit.

The measure takes effect 90 days after the current legislative session ends, which likely puts the effective date in July or August.

"I believe this legislation not only protects the Second Amendment rights of Arizona citizens, but restores those rights as well," Brewer, a Republican, said in a statement....

By eliminating the permit requirement, the Arizona legislation will allow people 21 or older to forego background checks and classes that are now required.

4. Wouldn't have changed anything.
Someone intent on committing murder isn't going to be stopped by the fact that they're violating permit laws.

23.  04/16/10 07:39 PM to be precise
PAUL DAVENPORT and JONATHAN J. COOPER | 04/16/10 07:39 PM, so this guy didn't need a permit and was able to conceal the weapon, so it seems. That sure makes killing easier. It lends a certain spontaneity.

20. Criminals don't abide by the law
this has nothing to do with what happened today. Most criminals are breaking the law even being near a gun. They still commit crimes with one.

26. Sure it's related. Might be indirectly related, but related none-the-less.

As long as we promote citizens carrying guns into public places -- churches, bars, parks, nursery schools, Chuck E Cheeze -- and act like it is perfectly normal and desirable, we'll have more of these situations. Heck, the police are all but powerless to do anything to some cowboy walking around in Arizona and similar states with guns strapped to his/her leg. Absolutely insane.

I'm sure the NRA has a contingent of agents on the scene to make sure gun toters' rights are protected.

29. Really now. Explain how a felon who is let out of prison and
is not allowed to have firearms committs a crime with a gun? Go on explain that to me? Did that law prevent someone from being killed by a gun that was illegal for him to have?

32. Yea, In AZ anyone can walk around with a gun strapped to their leg, and the police just wink.

So a felon gets a gun, straps it to his leg like all the law-abiding cowboys who can't walk out of their house without a gun. Thus, the felon walks around in public with impunity unless the police know he is a felon. Worse, all the little kids just go, "I can't wait until I'm old enough to strap a gun to my leg like these cowboys." Shoot, that's the same way most folks started smoking.

Besides, are you so sure this guy was a felon? Might have just been a teabaggin, NRA member, who relishes having a clip with the maximum load capacity.

Time to make public gun toting all but taboo.

21. A law against concealed carry, or gun ownership for that matter, won't stop murderers.
Much like how laws against murder don't seem to stop them.

27. It works in the U.K. and other sane places.
Guns just make murder and mayhem much, much easier and therefore much more common. Lots of would-be murderers won't go ahead and try to kill somebody if they have to use a knife or a club or something. There are always a few exceptions including in the sane places.

28. No, actually it doesn't work in the UK. Mexico has the strictest gun laws in the world,
Edited on Sat Jan-08-11 03:40 PM by Edweird
how's that working out? The murder rates in the UK are essentially unaffected - including with firearms.

You're calling armed criminals with unarmed citizens sane? To me that's about as far from sane as you can get.

Edited on Sat Jan-08-11 04:01 PM by moondust
Due to its rampant drug trade and close proximity to...(wait for it)...ARIZONA! and other gun-crazed areas of the gun-loving U.S.

Go live in the U.K. or some other sane place for a few months and get back to me about how gun laws don't work there. :boring:

37. Either the laws work or they don't. They don't.
Furthermore, I don't have to live in the UK to be able to ascertain that their gun laws are a failure - the numbers are available. Much like how I don;t have to live in Mexico to know that their gun laws are failures as well.
