A federal judge is dead, however--and I think there is a possibility that he was the actual target. He was given U.S. Marshall's protection after a ruling in favoring of some immigrants and then getting reamed on hate radio followed by hundreds of death threats. He was killed in this attack (as per news reports). Not sure how many others are dead. One of Giffords' aides is very likely dead.

I hope Congresswoman Giffords recovers well, and is able to follow up on who and what was behind this. I don't think that this is a simple case ('lone nut' gone off the deep end).
