My fellow Democrats: Protect yourselves, and remember history.
Let this be a wakeup call to everyone: if the right wing feels that they can walk up and assassinate a sitting congressperson in broad daylight, surrounded by a crowd, what do you think they'll feel they can do to everyone else? Maybe you've written a few too many letters to the editor bashing the Tea Party? Maybe your car is covered with liberal bumper stickers? Maybe you're not the same skin color, or sexuality, or religion as most of the people around you?

I say this not to frighten people, but to instill healthy caution: if a member of the United States Congress can be targeted for political killing, so can anyone. The right-wing hate machine has ginned up a group of people who really believe that assaulting or murdering a "socialist," a "queer," a "beaner," isn't wrong, that it's actually laudable. It is exactly this kind of inflaming of hatred, and focused blame on "those people" that have always resulted in extremism and violence throughout history, ranging from lynchings during Reconstruction to the rise of the brownshirts in the 1930s.

Protect yourselves. This is why I believe in practicing situational awareness, owning a gun, and preparing for emergencies. If you can't do that, get yourself a Taser, or simply watch your back. But I urge everyone to be a little more cautious. These precautions may be unnecessary. But then again, they may not.

1. Agreed and done.
This goes especially for women, minorities and anyone who looks "different."

2. Yeah, I just love how the local paper prints home addresses in letters to the editor
Especially when I write LTTEs taking the reich wing to task for stupid crap they do or say. I know there are other ways for the teabaggers to get at my info, but I wish the local paper didn't make it so easy for them.

16. Holy shit, seriously? If my paper did that, I'd probably already have gotten a letterbomb.
You really should start a campaign to shame them into not doing that. It's a MASSIVE breach of privacy and safety.

18. Yep
I would have thought the lawyers would have told them that's not really a good idea. Maybe they have shitty lawyers.

Edited on Sat Jan-08-11 07:29 PM by lifesbeautifulmagic
probably not too coherently. It doesn't matter if the shooter was stable, unstable, healthy, ill, a teabagger, a larouchie, or just a plain old con

It's just that the people targeted are always libs and Dem's. Always. always.

the rightwing must take some responsibility for the violent rhetoric, it is setting off something in some people and WE are the ones getting it.

10. ah yes, really
you can attempt to wash away the blame by the "crazies on all sides" comment, but all the violent rhetoric is coming from one side, and all the targets are on the other, being liberals or dems.

Please. You are being insulting, and very interesting that your first comments to this site run along the let's all just share the blame line. Telling and interesting.

17. I defy anyone pushing that shit to show me a Republican who's had brick through their windows.
Or their offices vandalized. Or their home addresses published. Or white powder sent to them. Or LETTER BOMBS sent to them. Or BEEN FUCKING SHOT.

Yeah, "both sides do it." And it's just a coincidence that every time someone goes off and kills a guard at the Holocaust museum, or shoots up a bunch of cops, or murders someone in a church, it's a right-winger. I'm sure George Tiller would affirm that it's just a coincidence, even though nobody's tried to knife Randall Terry.

We need more rapture ready kooks running this country who think just like this shooter does.

12. The Dems aren't in charge anymore
The Republicans have the House, the Senate, and the Supreme Court.

15. They had the Senate even when we had that "supermajority"
The Republicans made sure they had an ace in the hole - and then they ground the Senate to a halt. And, unfortunately, Senate Democrats just sat there and let them do it.
