"The Next Step"
“They're afraid they'll have to fight for their liberty in more Second Amendment kinds of ways? That's why I look at this as almost an imperative. If we don't win at the ballot box, what will be the next step?” – Sharon Angle; Tea Party Poster Child; from 2010 US Senate campaign.

I'd like to take a moment to discuss a few thoughts about today's act of terrorism in Tucson. And that is exactly what it was – terrorism. It differs only in scale from other terrorist attacks, from 9/11 to the murder of “abortion” doctors; from the on-going terrorist attacks against people based upon their skin color, ethnic identity, or sexuality, to the less frequent, massive violence of the Tim McVeighites. All of these situations involve an individual, tied to a shadowy group, that are intent upon making a statement of hatred, violence, and death.

I'm listening to the news as I write this. Hence, I am sure that the details of this vicious crime will be updated, or changed, by morning. “A very disturbed young man,” a journalist just called the gunman. Indeed. The same journalist just reported the gunman referred to himself as a “terrorist.”) I suspect that within 24 hours, the media will report a legend of a mentally ill loner. While hopefully everyone can agree that he is 100% responsible for all of his acts, I will never believe that he was alone responsible.

That “shadowy group” he belongs to may be limited to a segment of socially marginalized people who listen to the Sharon Angle and Glenn Beck types, who believes their lies and fear tactics, and who actually do act in near isolation. That is certainly a possibility. Even in this case, those who stir the pot of paranoia are still responsible for creating the atmosphere that gives these freaks license to act out publicly their brutality.

In fact, that is a basic tactic of the cowardly types, including the right-wing hate radio personalities, the loud-mouthed political shit-stirrers, and especially the fundamentalist religious types. They understand that while many might listen to and agree with their sick rants, they are most likely to influence young men to act upon delusional and immoral passions. This is why the military outfits of the world tend to recruit young men; few mature adults will submit to the authority of the gym coach/drill sergeant, and worry if their bed is made tight, and their shoes polished correctly.

Is this fellow mentally ill? Obviously, a person who thinks about committing such an act has issues. The person who commits such an act is not the picture of mental stability. This 22-year old may have some Axis 1 or Axis 2 illness. Perhaps equally important, he is invested in a more wide-spread social psychosis, a delusional system that has spread from the 'birthers” and other fringe-of-society groups, to a larger portion of the republican right.

In the dark and wormy corners they inhabit, they have fears which cause them to cling to their guns and bibles. Especially those guns. And their leadership, no matter if it is in person, on television, the radio, or the internet, has convinced them that their bible not only justifies their violence, but demands it. And without a doubt, there are young people willing and able to commit these acts of terrorism. That is always “the next step.”

I appreciate it. This brutal act is not surprising, certainly not unexpected. But it is just as sickening.

3. Well....the tea party groupies were mainly old folks...
and have served their purpose..and are becomming a liability. There needed to be some way to enrage the younger anger...which would "target" their anger. We had Palin's list already....but how to pull in the young anger. How about "The job killing health care bill"....that should do it. Lots of young angries out there who see no job for them now or in the future. Some are unstable enough to act. Yep! It worked.

8. Right.
I watched the trial of that freak who shot the doctor in church; it was on Tru TV. There are a few "middle-aged" people who will answer the call to violence. But it surely is easier to try to motivate young men to commit these acts.

15. Yep.
And of course there is a campaign to make this guy out as a "leftist." Even on DU, there are some saying that those of us who taken note of the connection between the shit that Palin is spouting and this terrorist act are "a lynch mob." Nope: this is absolutely the result of the right-wing hate attack.

6. K&R. That's why we have to take the looney right fringe seriously.
Yes, we scoff at idiots like Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin or the Glenn Becks of this world, but there are young, impressionable minds soaking up the rhetoric and imagery these morons espouse.

I'm afraid this isn't the end. Raul Grijalva warned that something was going to happen after the threats he (and others) received.

20. This past fall,
I had an op-ed in one of the bigger regional newspapers in my area, in which I said that the right-wing politicians and "journalist's" calls to violence would cause some in the margins of society to act out violently. All of us knew this was going to happen. And it will continue.

Rep. Giffords' father said that the Tea Party has made it known that they viewed her as their "enemy." They have identified others in national positions as "enemies." It would be foolish to think for a second that they have not identified local "enemies."

How it is handled will be one of the keys in determining how much more of this type of violence the country is subjected to in 2011.

11. Incitement to violence
Krugman wrote a good column on this in 2009 following the uproar over the internal report about the upsurge in rightwing extremism. Here are the 1st and last paragraphs:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/12/opinion/12krugman.html?_r=1

The Big Hate

By PAUL KRUGMAN
Published: June 11, 2009

Back in April, there was a huge fuss over an internal report by the Department of Homeland Security warning that current conditions resemble those in the early 1990s — a time marked by an upsurge of right-wing extremism that culminated in the Oklahoma City bombing.
~~~
And that’s a threat to take seriously. Yes, the worst terrorist attack in our history was perpetrated by a foreign conspiracy. But the second worst, the Oklahoma City bombing, was perpetrated by an all-American lunatic. Politicians and media organizations wind up such people at their, and our, peril.
I'm with Krugman and with you.
28. Constant drumbeat of violence
From Palin's "target" imagery to the reportage of that using equally violent terms to the smashing of windows and sabotage of a representative's brother home propane to what you posted to the hate radio attacks(and subsequent threats received) to Judge John Roll.
Actions have consequences and this pattern of inciting people to violence through this rhetoric and these images had a terrible consequence today.
22. So, let's catalog the excuses we will now hear....
"...within 24 hours, the media will report a legend of a mentally ill loner. While hopefully everyone can agree that he is 100% responsible for all of his acts, I will never believe that he was alone responsible." (Spot-on!)
So, let's catalog the excuses we will now hear....
"...the cross hairs and language of hunting you saw on those Sarah Palin announcements were sports metaphors. We use them all the time in our society - 'congressional opponents are staging a full court press against the legislation', 'the speech hit a home run', 'the attack on his opponent blindsided him.' You liberals, who don't understand that hunting is a sport, enjoyed by millions, are now twisting these phrases on the SarahPac site to mean something they clearly did not."
"...you folks on the left are conspiracy theorists. You accuse the Bush administration of planning 9-11, and yet you demonize the so-called 'birthers.' Now, a lone nut case commits a horrific act, and suddenly it's a conspiracy involving the whole tea party and Sarah Palin."
"...guns are not the problem. Guns are inanimate objects. They never killed anyone."
"...with the kind of socialistic opression we're seeing out of Washington right now, it's a wonder we're not seeing more of this kind of thing. This is a young man who represents many Americans who are fed up -- who have been pushed to their limit."
29. The right-wing movement appeals to people who have personal crises
They find a strong personality, aka a magic helper, who they listen to and accept their words almost without question. A kid like this is definitely susceptible to the type of violent rhetoric that comes from the right. Is he responsible for his own actions? Without a doubt. But that kid is still the product of an environment and if that environment is a pretty ugly one.
-the defense of sarah palin and the other violence advocates
-the handling of the case against the shooter (it is terrorism-is dept. of "homeland security" involved?)
-the attempts of the media, beginning with KO, to find equivalence between right and left
-the reaction of the tea baggers in their own defense
response from the left. We know that propaganda works, we have spoken out against hate radio and hate personalities. Let us not forget all the gay kids who have been beat up, the black lynchings, the abortion doctor killing, the many threats against President Obama--that each can be directly linked to extremist propaganda. If propaganda works, then why don't they use it to help people find the help they need, to work together, to learn to cope with PTSD, or to increase understanding of our many differences?!
Like berserker weapons, their rhetoric is released into an already troubled and overstressed country to spread hate and chaos---to what end??? This is the formula for social dysfunction: Hate speech + Stressed Population = Violence. Period.
The RW will try to hide behind free speech, and first amendment rights--but their actions actually ENDANGER our freedoms, not expand them, because freedom comes with education and responsibility. You do not give a loaded gun to an insane person, just as you do not give a microphone to someone ordering people to go out and murder people. Our freedoms are hand in hand with accurate information and education, and a mentally balanced citizenry. It is as if these people are being enabled to act in order to take away our civil rights, to increase chaos so that martial law be enacted.
Fox has to go, Beck, Coulter, Limbaugh, Palin(no more funding for candidacy!), O'Reilly---we have to demand all of their firings. They are not only directly endangering people, but they are endangering our civil and human rights.
Edited on Sun Jan-09-11 01:52 PM by PerpetuallyDazed
Stuff like this kind've makes this liberal want to visit to the shooting range and perhaps obtain her own conceal and carry license!
While I advocate and live pacifism, I'm not naive -- sometimes the use of protective force is necessary for the defense of others. When you're matched against a gun, what is your other alternative? Hopefully to pull yours before the right-wing crazy reloads.
40. I believe that
Minister Malcolm X was correct in saying that "turning the other cheek" can include breaking your opponent's jaw, if he is the aggressor. I in no sense advocate being a victim of violence, other than as a tactic in non-violent protests. Other than that, I believe fully in self-defense.
