White House Staffers Got a Raise Last Year, And You Did Not
Source: gawker.com

John Cook — The White House released its annual salary report last week, and as usual, it's nice to work for Barack Obama: Most staffers who were there for more than a year got a salary bump. A bigger one than you did.

The last time we checked in on White House salaries, we found that an astonishing 75% of continuing staffers got raises from 2009 to 2010—a huge number given the fact that, according to compensation experts, most companies had skipped routine raises that year in reaction to the economic crisis that the White House was busy failing to solve. This time around—from 2010 to 2011—the ratio is a little less dramatic. Of the 270 White House staffers who have been there for more than a year, 146—or 54%—received raises. The average salary increase was 8%. If you look at only staffers who got raises, the average increase was twice that.

Looks like a right wing site to me, but if it is accurate....

1. I haven't had a raise in 3 years
and will likely not get one in the next 2 years. Oh joy!

2. Plenty more people than Obama's staff got raises last year --
not me, but I know several in the private sector who did.

Hit piece.

4. Right, and government employees ordinarily get 'raises,' 'step-increases,'

based on length of service etc.

Dear gate, 'hit pieces' work well around here.

:-(

5. So, nobody deserves a raise now?
I got a 30% bump last year by changing jobs. Is that bad?

Replace union member with WH staff member...

7. Apparently not. Instead of demanding better pay, we must all embrace a slave wage as "normal."

20. Didn't FDR enforce some austerity measures during the great depression?

We could learn a thing or two from that generation.

6. the chart, if true, doesn't make the White House look good at all
Edited on Wed Jul-06-11 08:58 PM by tomm2thumbs

At some point, those percentages are pretty over the top for an economy trying to get out of a tailspin. I would be interested to know if those are folks who moved into positions that already made that income amount (which is what I suspect), or if these are merely 'raises' to existing employees in the same position, in the traditional sense of the word.

These seem like fairly high-up positions. We do want good people instead of morons in these jobs, helping run the White House and our government, right? Good people cost money.

The right wing is trying to get people outraged over a WH staffer making $75k a year while ignoring the robber baron CEOs and hedge fund managers that suck up a thousand times that and give absolutely nothing positive back to society for it.

most of those jumps are for changes in position vs. generic 'raises'...

26. White House staff pay
It never ceases to amaze me how gullible we are! My father was a Federal employee his entire life and several of my family members work or have worked in Washington including Congressional positions. While some of these positions are relatively highly placed, MOST of them are glorified admin jobs!!!! The government is NOTORIOUS for giving fancy sounding titles to low level jobs - what we call a JANITOR in the REAL world is a SANITARY ENGINEER in the government!!! This is just another example of "do as I say not as I do"! Obama says he has frozen government expenses?! Then how come he has requested $29 BILLION for 2012 for the Energy Dept when they ONLY got $26 BILLION in 2010???? Trust me, as someone who grew up around government, for every dollar they spend doing good they WASTE THREE!!! This is just one more example of that!!! STOP WASTING OUR MONEY!!!

raises should stop under the Federal freeze, I hope.

14. I took their comment to mean that if there is a freeze, it shouldn't be selectively enforced

but I may be wrong - probably shouldn't speak for them - just how I read it

25. Pay attention, Obama ordered a Federal freeze
If Joe Blow, down the road, who works for the Forest Service, and makes 20,000 a year doesn't get a raise, why should they.

10. These people EARN their money.
Let me know how many Americans are essentially "on call" or otherwise 24/7.

The righties are masters at fomenting this kind of agitation among people, without giving complete information. :evilfrown:

18. I think we all earn our money.
I find it ironic that they are not paid according to their results like the teachers are being made to. Federal employees have had their salaries frozen.

15. I got a raise last year. But not the year before. I don't begrudge folks who get raises.
Besides, federal employees get paid less than they could get in the private sector, anyway. It's not like they're CEO's getting millions in bonuses, while their company sinks.

16. So why should I be upset that they got raises when prices in the country have gone up?
After all its not their fault that alot of people should have gotten pay raises in the country but corporations while raising their own prices arent passing the money on to anyone except themselves at the corporate level.
