Obama proposes cuts to Social Security and Medicare
by Joe Sudbay
July 6, 2011

Unfortunately, I doubt anyone is going to be surprised by this development. Deeply disappointed, yes. Amazing frustrated, yes. Beyond annoyed, yes. And, wondering what the hell they're thinking at the White House, definitely.

Maybe the President has been negotiating with himself for so long that he's lost all perspective. In exchange for what might possibly be some minor tax revenue increases, the President is giving GOPers what they couldn't get from George Bush, a GOP-controlled House and a GOP-led Senate. Yes, from Obama, Republicans are getting what they've always wanted. Lori Montgomery at the Washington Post broke the story:

“Obviously, there will be some Democrats who don’t believe we need to do entitlement reform. But there seems to be some hunger to do something of some significance,” said a Democratic official familiar with the administration’s thinking. “These moments come along at most once a decade. And it would be a real mistake if we let it pass us by.”

That "hunger to do something of some significance" is fed by the GOPers and the DC pundits. The White House bought it. They're selling out on core Democratic priniciples. For what?

Obama Seeking Social Security Cuts In Deficit Reduction Deal
By Zeke Miller
July 6, 2011

President Barack Obama is raising the stakes in the ongoing talks to raise the debt ceiling and lower the deficit — proposing $4 trillion in cuts over the next decade, including reductions to Social Security, The Washington Post is reporting.

Obama has already indicated he would support cuts to the "delivery-side" of Medicare and Medicaid as long as Republicans agree to new revenues, but including Social Security in the deal will be tough for many Democrats to stomach.

Realizing there is a broad public consensus to "do it big," Obama is going beyond the $2.4 trillion in cuts previously discussed as part of a deal to raise the debt limit.

More Republicans are coming around to agreeing to revenue increases as part of a deal — though they said they will not agree to new taxes.

In debt talks, Obama offers Social Security cuts
By Lori Montgomery
July 6, 2011

President Obama is pressing congressional leaders to consider a far-reaching debt-reduction plan that would force Democrats to accept major changes to Social Security and Medicare in exchange for Republican support for fresh tax revenue.

As part of his pitch, Obama is proposing significant reductions in Medicare spending and for the first time is offering to tackle the rising cost of Social Security, according to people in both parties with knowledge of the proposal. The move marks a major shift for the White House and could present a direct challenge to Democratic lawmakers who have vowed to protect health and retirement benefits from the assault on government spending.

Rather than roughly $2 trillion in savings, he White House is now seeking a plan that would slash more than $4 trillion from annual budget deficits over the next decade, stabilize borrowing, and defuse the biggest budgetary time bombs that are set to explode as the cost of health care rises and the nation’s population ages.

Privately, some congressional Democrats were alarmed by the president’s proposal, which would adjust a formula that uses inflation to determine Social Security payouts. But others described it as primarily a bargaining strategy intended to demonstrate Obama’s willingness to compromise and highlight the Republican refusal to raise taxes.

Had Obama pased MEDICARE FOR ALL, the Democratic Party and its candidates would

16. I think Dennis Kucinich might be a better choice.
He already has the experience from having run back in '08 and he doesn't carry the stigma of being a self-described socialist. Bernie can be his VP.
Kucinich/Sanders 2012!

10. He really doesn't. It's quite sad really
I've come to accept that he is actually is doing the best he can in that he is temperamentally incapable of any more. The man doesn't handle criticism or conflict effectively enough to barrel through it and actually lead on important issues. Maybe a few more years as a legislator would have helped him.

23. See your point, but I really think we do know
Obama has been 100% predictable so far.

1 - he gives the Repugs 99% of what they want before negotiations begin and frames the whole debate in their terms
2 - repugs double their demands since they know he has no spine
3 - he's "forced" (his words, not mine) to capitulate and since he's a nice guy, gives them even more than they asked for
4 - tells progressives they are meaningless and should just shut up and worship him while he savages any chance of Dems winning again because he has destroyed any program dems support

Obama appointed people to serve on the cat food commission and chose people with stated desires to destroy SS. This is what Obama wants, he's the trojan horse the Repug party is using to get everything that no Repug president could ever get. Absolutely freaking shameful. I'm ashamred I volunteered and gave so much money to him in 2008 - NOT AGAIN!!!!!!

11. If I were writing right wing campaign commercials
I would write one saying Obama proposes cuts to SS and Medicare. The low info voters will eat it up. It is a bad move. There should be film of Obama saying how he will stand up for these programs no matter what running on all channels. This is a really stupid move on so many levels.

15. I'll wait to see what happens.
All of this seems to be sourced from the Washington Post article. Despite citing "people in both parties", there aren't a lot of quotes, even from unnamed officials.

I'm not saying it's not true. It very well might be, in which case it would be an utter disgrace. But I'll hope against hope it's not true for now...

Really, if your unhappy fine but how about explaining in a calm and rational manner exactly why some cuts shouldnt be made in some areas for the programs rather than this destructive rhetoric the so called tea party nuts spew.

the topic itself is something that we should actuaally encourage discussing even though we dont really know what cuts exactly if any are going to finally be proposed from the whitehouse.

22. Pure slash & burn on Obama's part...
Edited on Thu Jul-07-11 12:26 PM by IndyMaine
He knows he won't win in 2012 unless Kook Bachmann gets the GOP nomination (which won't happen because the GOP machine doesn't want it to happen). Romney will be the nominee, and he'll beat Obama because of deep dissatisfaction with jobs & the economy. So Obama feels free to do all the damage he can to Medicare, Social Security (and who knows what else) from now until the end of his term. We probably haven't seen ANYTHING yet.

It must be a very liberating feeling for him, to release the inner-Republican demons he's kept locked up inside himself for so long...and shit all over so many poor, vulnerable and disadvantaged people.
