In case you're wondering, it's 22%
Edited on Thu Jul-07-11 08:14 AM by MannyGoldstein
Obama's "bipartisan" commission, including "Democrats" like Dick Durbin, http://www.handsoffss.org/what-is-the-deficit-commission-why-did-it-recommend-deep-cuts-in-social-security.html">voted to recommend an eventual 22% cut in Social Security benefits. That's more than $50,000 in today's dollars per recipient.

That's what's on the table.

Enjoy.

3. We need to get the word out
Republicans and their friends on our side of the aisle are spinning this as just a tiny bit of trimming around the edges.

5. Seconded, but I think we're talking about the recommendations from the Catfood Comission.
Manny is just refreshing us on the specific recommendation, I believe.

According to the Social Security Administration’s Chief Actuary, these changes would eventually reduce the average recipient’s Social Security benefits by 22%. Given that the average recipient is currently receiving $1,164 per month, this works out to about a $56,000 cut over their lifetime.

8. They should be quadrupling benefits.
And, were people with integrity at the controls, those at the top of the heap would volunteer to open their wallets to pay.

10. I guess the cat food commission really did serve a purpose after all.
And the wars continue. WallStreet's enjoying record profits as are the big corporations along with their tax cuts.

American people will eventually be 1/2 step in the graveyard before we're eligible for SS and it goes on and on.

14. Plus, there is this now, from Obama:
"the White House is revisiting a proposal raised earlier in the negotiations to change the inflation measurement used to calculate Social Security cost-of-living adjustments, thus reducing annual increases."

praise or no praise, there was no formal report from the commission.

18. Are you stating that they did not vote in favor of a 22% cut in Social Security?
Formal, informal, or with Velveeta on top?

Edited on Thu Jul-07-11 08:41 AM by trumad
minus 22 percent: $258.94

1177 minus 258.94 = 918.06

20. "They" are not going to "cut" Social Security.
They are going to "strengthen it" by reducing benefits.

Who will STAND and FIGHT for THIS American Majority?
You will know them by their WORKS,
not by their rhetoric.

21. If this goes through it will have a dramatic effect on society--
grandparents would have to move in with their kids, many of who already have unemployed kids living at home....wow. That is if people are lucky enough to have family who are willing to take them in....but more people will be homeless!!

These oil wars are killing this country, bit by bit.
