I guess it is up to our Democratic Representation in Congress now
Obama does not cast a vote in Congress. He can say whatever he wants but it takes Congress to pass the Bills..If there are any Democrats left at all, I would hope they will not stand for any more cuts to our social safety net.. Remember as a part of the Health Care Law five hundred billion has already been cut from Medicare. Remember how the Republicans ranted on about that? How they wanted to "protect" Medicare from those horible Democrats that were slashing it.. I expect this new concession by the Whitehouse to be a non-starter...

1. How many progressives do you think would vote against cuts in Congress?

There needs to be a massive outcry and movement against cuts in Medicare/Social Security to stop them.

2. while on the other hand many Dems were CHEERING those cuts, defending them as wonderful
and necessary (and pragmatic and divine and whatnot)
2010-11 has been highly instructive as to the shape of our political system

3. He has dragged them out to the end of the limb with him
and is now sawing the limb off behind them.

To stop Obama's reign of destruction, they would have to rebel and essentially split the Party. They would then be blamed for his failure to be reelected and for the return of Repukes to unified One Party monopoly on power (which is, in the longrun, the worst thing for Repukes since they cannot govern). The Democrats are too cowardly to face that rap. And so while the GOP is "extorting" Obama, he in turn is successfully extorting the Democrats, with more or less the same Reaganite goal in mind. The little donkeys will go along with whatever.
