Breaking: News of the World Will NOT Close--Merely Change its Name
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/blogpost/post/rupert-murdoch-a-plan-for-news-of-the-world-all-along/2011/07/07/gIQAU1EP2H_blog.html

Quelle surprise.

Nothing represents the wipe-the-floor-with-people-until-they're-used-up mentality of the Murdoch empire quite so graphically as the news that amid "shock" and "surprise" and "in the wake of the hacking scandal" the tab rag News of the World is going under.... but WAIT! Is it REALLY?

Well, apparently not.

It's just firing a lot of people with seniority and benefits, putting a lot of suppliers out of work, consolidating expenses and operational overhead, and moving the vast stockpile of toxic waste that represents its "journalistic" stock in trade over to sister Murdoch publication, the Sun, which will now, surprise, surprise! be putting out a Sunday edition.

Doubtless some of the NotW employees whose stomachs did painful convulsions earlier today will breathe a sigh of relief at the notion that if they show up in their BEST clothes, hats in hand, and very 'umble, very 'umble indeed, Sir, prepared to take a pay cut and shittier benefits package, they might still be getting some semblance of a pay packet a few months down the road.

I wish I could say I were astonished, disgusted or outraged, but alas, we've been through so many similar convulsions with so many similar vapid, viperous oligarchs over the last few years that all I can manage is a kind of weary nausea.

diffidently,
Bright

1. yep. Murdoch just found a way to cut some costs, get rid of some employees
and consolidate his power.:grr:

all while pretending to "do the right thing".

The type of people who read that crap will probably assume that it's all over

9. Oh I hope this doesn't end the discussion. Apparently the investigation is ongoing, both
into the press and the police.

2. If the human race really cared about its future, it would do something about the Murdochs
of the world.

4. Good concept, but it would have to be the SUNDAY Turd.
Not sure the CofE would appreciate that, though.

If you get a bad name, just change the name. That way the "Invisible Hand of the Marketplace" can't find you for a while.
