What cuts to medicare and SS are being discussed
Edited on Thu Jul-07-11 05:06 PM by Juche
I just read that cuts to these programs are 'on the table', so what cuts are being discussed? Raising the age, lowering the benefits, lowering the COLA increases, increasing copayments (for medicare, etc)? Or are they more progressive cuts like means testing?

This sucks. I think the negotiations right now are already something like 85% spending cuts, 15% tax hikes. And even that is hard to get through.

1. The President himself doesn't know, as he stated earlier today. In that same....

...statement he indicated that both the Democratic and Republican negotiators are working out their "ultimate bottom lines" and they'll be getting together on Sunday to hash it out more. As the President said, "Nothing's agreed to till everything's agreed to."

Medicare, Medicaid & Social Security should be off the fucking table, period!

There are some here trying to spin this as the "kinder, gentler" cuts and maybe that line of thinking will work on someone other than themselves. Maybe.

3. How would we know, if they are behind closed doors?
They are talking about pain and hurting. Is it us or them who will feel the pain? I get that it's us and they aren't going to feel anything because they have their nice health care, salaries and corporate donors to keep them well fed and warm.

4. ^^This!
All this extra stealthy, downlow, back alley, behind closed doors sworn to secrecy shit has got to stop. Can't stand any of these back room deals but this especially pisses me off.

SSI, Medicare/Medicaid are The People's safety net, it belongs to us so why aren't The People or a representative of The People privy to these discussions?

Transparency in government, my carcass....
