A big shoutout to DU today. |
|
This tragedy notwithstanding, it's news events like we all witnessed today that makes me really appreciate this site. There are lots of great progressive sites on the web, but none are designed to handle these kinds of stories. All day long, I kept a tab opened on my browser to read the latest. Hundreds of people contributing to details and aspects of the story that you couldn't find elsewhere. Palin's contribution to this tragedy and Loughren's bizarre Youtube ramblings were posted hours before the MSM caught up. RW bullshit threads/comments got knocked down as quick as they got posted. We were ahead of HuffPo, MSNBC, and every major news site. Cable wasn't close.
If you're new to DU and you appreciate the value that this site delivers when sudden news events happen, think about chipping in a few dollars to keep this place hopping.

3. Totally agree and I really have to credit Skinner, EarlG and the rest |
|
of the crew. DU's format is so easy to read, good large sized print, easy to move around, easy to check responses to posts. I could go on and on but you know what I mean. I love the Lounge with the humor, I love the great writers who contribute and I love the humorous contributors who make the whole thing worthwhile, no matter how lousy the day or week may be. Thanks Skinner, I owe you some money, checking the couch for change as I type..LOL.

19. The anti-thesis of DU |
|
:-)
The only thing we share in common is that we both have opinionated people who comment on politics. Differences are, we have a much better communication platform and our politics aren't dominated by anti-socialists who hate what this country stands for.

A great tune selection from the greatest music show of all time. I must be getting old, because all the new stuff I hear today seems stale compared to what was happening in the late 60's/early 70's. Truly, the Golden Age of Music. :-) :fistbump:

35. I went over there yesterday, and then gave up |
|
not from disgust (my usual reaction to re-posts here from FR), but from frustration about the site's design and slowness. And they weren't exactly on top of the news the way DU was yesterday.
DU had that yahoo stuff from Loughner to my family when there were only 310 views. Folks here are on top of things. Plus DU is fast and well-organized.
I've been a contributor for many years, and will go back to contributing just as soon as I'm gainfully employed again.

47. Do you remember the Superman comics |
|
wherein he found himself in the bizarro world? He met his counterpart there, a creature who spoke in the most rudimentary of utterances and seemed to be a squared and lopsided version of Superman.
Seinfeld had an episode exploring the strange bizarro counterpart to his group.
That's what Freeperland is. A bizarro homunculus obscene parody of DU and other places of reason.

Since the 2000 election and after 9-11, this is my go to site for information. I look for breaking news here and in fact, learned of today's tragedy by taking a quick peek at Late Breaking News. This site is by far the best source of immediate news on the web.

Even when the news story is complicated and breaking and all the facts aren't known yet, there is no better place to go to read the very latest.
Critical mass of intelligent, informed, passionate people + very readable and accessible format + good moderation and lots of posters with good bullshit detectors = WIN!

29. DUers have already changed sides on an issue twice before most breaking stories hit cable news. |
|
It's like having your own intelligence organization. Hell, there have been at least two breaking stories where DUers did near real-time transcripts of news reports coming in, in another language. In those cases DU was at least an hour ahead of everyone else.

37. I guess, after 10 years, I've run out of things to say. |

;)
My cynicism about the state of our politics has gotten worse over the years and I'm less inclined to spend hours upon hours immersed in posting about the various outrages that seem to pop up daily. But I just can't quit DU and when real breaking news is happening, there's a pretty good chance I'm on board, hitting that refresh button.
