7.6 Pacific earthquake shakes remote Kermadec Islands
7.6 Pacific earthquake shakes remote Kermadec Islands; New Zealand braces for small tsunami

By Associated Press, Published: July 6

NEW YORK — A powerful magnitude-7.6 earthquake rattled the remote Kermadec Islands in the Pacific Ocean, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. It triggered a small tsunami that had New Zealand bracing for high waves.

The quake was felt as far away as Christchurch, New Zealand, said New Zealand’s Geological and Nuclear Sciences agency.

The volcanic Kermadec Island peaks are a remote outpost that are generally uninhabited aside from a weather station and a hostel for visiting New Zealand scientists.

New Zealand Department of Conservation spokesman Nick Hirst said eight workers on Raoul Island, one of the Kermadec Islands, were not injured by the quake...

Tsunami alert cancelled after Pacific quake

Updated Thu Jul 7, 2011 7:04am AEST

A tsunami alert for New Zealand and Tonga has been cancelled, but there is still a risk of dangerous seas after a strong 7.7-magnitude undersea earthquake.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued the tsunami warning after the quake struck off New Zealand's Kermadec Islands at a depth of just one kilometre this morning.

It had warned that a tsunami could hit parts of Tonga and New Zealand.

Howver that warning has now been cancelled.

3. That was yesterday.
There was no tsunami. Those islands are uninhabited. Read the date on your story.

Sheesh.

I come back home and just noticed it on one of the news wires. The dateline on the tsunami alert off was 7/7.

Sorry, bitches, if it upset your arguing about why our way of life is disappearing.

I had not seen this story. I did see the one today in Japan, did you see that? That one was 5.6 or so. This one, also under the Pacific, was a 7.6. I live on the Pacific Rim where these happen and there have been an awful lot of them that have been bigger than the usual shaker round these parts in the last year. It is only a matter of time before California is rocked again.

Having been through the biggest one here in 83 years and witnessed first hand the death and destruction of a big one, I pay attention to anything on the Pacific Rim.

It is a tick tock situation for me. I really do have PTSD from having been in a big one in a vulnerable place and nightmares about another big one here. I'm so sorry I inconvenienced your day and forced you all to comment.

Sorry to be in your way. You could always, you know, ignore the thread then. Kind of like I do with about 75% of the threads on here. Is that so hard to do?

5. Being rude, you don't really deserve a response
But Japan has had aftershocks of 5 or stronger virtually every day since the big earthquake. Just look here:

8. I have to think that you are a clown, uninformed, or have never been in a quake
Because there is a hell of a lot of difference between a 7.6 as discussed here, and the 5.6 tremor fromm the other day off Japan.

I was in a 7.1 quake and I do not want to repeat that experience, but hey, nature bats last.

You see the points on the Richter scale are like 10X in severity. Anything above 7.0 is much worse, worth noting and discussing.

Others did not see any post on here about this 7.6 NZ quake either.

Where the fuck did you all see it posted here?

How 'bout the 7.3 quake just last night?

Nothing to see here, only a 7.3 aftershock, a day or so after another 7.+ quake on that part of the Pacific Rim.

Nice place...black sand means volcanoes - - which is what these islands are - - the tips of huge volcanoes.
