In the next week we'll see one of two things:

1) Obama will backpedal fast, and start holding the line on SSI and Medicare, indicating some desire for re-election; he might plausibly paint this episode as an attempt to trick House GOP members into dissing some very popular entitlements

2) Obama will continue to cave, indicating that he could care less - or hell, maybe he just wants to lose outright

You don't ostensibly drop protective support for something that ~75% of the voting public wants left untouched without some kind of ulterior motivation.
