Become a citizen co-sponsor of Sheldon Whitehouse's Protecting Social Security and Medicare Res
Co-sponsor the Sense of the Senate on Protecting Social Security and Medicare

The Washington Post is reporting: "In debt talks, Obama offers Social Security cuts"

We as Democrats must stand firm against any cuts to Social Security or Medicare benefits. Period.

So Senator Whitehouse is introducing a Senate resolution to tell the President and congressional budget negotiators on both sides of the aisle in unambiguous terms: Cuts to Social Security and Medicare benefits should be off the table.

snip

b) Sense of the Senate: It is the Sense of the Senate that any agreement to reduce the budget deficit should not include cuts to Social Security or Medicare benefits.

(Text of the resolution, co-sponsor form at link.)

6. It doesn't specifically mention changing the COLA formula or raising the retirement age...
two things which are the most frequently mentioned as changes to Social Security and
many people argue don't constitute 'cuts'.

12. And I bet we're in for a raft of weasel words about what a cut is or isn't.
But not from Whitehouse.

This is the sort of thing that major Democratic organization and even Obama himself needs to be doing to show a true commitment to protecting it - not this pussyfooting around that there are cuts on the table, etc.

15. Sheldon Whitehouse once spent nearly an hour & a half talking election integrity to...

...one of VotePA's affiliated county groups in State College PA. He was there to speak at a dinner and we set up a late afternoon meeting with him. I expected 5 minutes and a few handshakes; instead Senator Whitehouse gave us almost an hour and a half of solid dialogue with the local citizens (who eventually junked their paperless DREs and got voter-verified paper ballots!)

He's a decent guy and an asset to the Democratic Party in my book.
