Jesus... You Just Can't Make This Shit Up...
DCCC warns GOP put Soc. Security cuts on the table as 3rd ranking House Dem put them there too
by Joe Sudbay (DC) on 7/07/2011 10:14:00 PM

<snip>

Got an email from the DCCC tonight with the subject line "Off the table":

I need your urgent help. Republicans are gearing up enact their radical plan to balance the budget on the backs of seniors, women and people with disabilities.

At this moment, Speaker Boehner is crafting a deficit deal that would gut Medicare and Social Security, while slashing benefits for senior and the middle class in order to make sure he protects tax breaks for millionaires. This is unacceptable and House Democrats will not stand for this....

Sign our petition right now and join me in telling Republicans that Social Security and Medicare cuts are off the table.

We've got bigger problems than Boehner. President Obama put Social Security and Medicare on the table.

And, the DCCC needs to meet James Clyburn, the third-ranking Democrat in the House. He too said today that Social Security is on the table:

18. You really put any credance in that lying POS?
Any self-declared 'Deaniac' who trumpets his progressive credentials, while attacking the "professional left" is a fucking liar.

And he is WRONG on damn near every point in that article, doing the same strawman creation he accuses the other guy of engaging in.

2. Do I have it right that
based on this blurb, the DCCC would appear to be urging the Democratic electorate to stand up to the GOP so that Democratic officeholders don't have to? If so, may I say, "what chickensh!ts!"

3. The BENEFITS aren't on the table, the costs are, if I understood
Dean and Clyburn and Pelosi correctly. Dean and Clyburn I saw speak at length, Pelosi I'm gleaning from her statements after the meeting today. Dean, Clyburn are cautiously okay with how it's going THUS FAR (that they know about, anyway) but they were talking about costs, not benefits.

But ALERT: Both Dean and Jared Bernstein expressed concern about Medicaid. Don't know if it's because nobody is paying attention to it and they could slip something in when nobody's looking, or if they're aware of some discussion. But that's something we need to stay on them about, too.

It's agreed all around that benefits can not be touched, and I think the House will stand strong, if it comes to that.

22. How do you substantially cut costs without affecting benefits?
You don't pay, you don't get served.

11. They trashed him:
This shouldn't come as a complete surprise since Clyburn is an honorary co-chair of Third Way, the corporate, conservative group that's always trying to undermine the Democratic agenda. Apparently, Clyburn's more loyal to Third Way than the Democratic agenda. Bil Daley used to be on the Board of Third Way, too. That group is gleeful that Obama put Social Security on the table -- almost as gleeful as the GOPers who couldn't achieve such cuts under Bush. Since Third Way is undermining the Democratic base, maybe the group's staff should do all the volunteer outreach, lit drops and phone-banking for the 2012 reelection campaign. Wait, they can't. They've got no constituency except for their corporate benefactors. But they've apparently got a seat at the same table the Social Security cuts are on.>>

They ought to be ashamed of speaking about him that way.

17. Some reason for that link?
No one disputes his being a part of that group. However the comments from the blog were rude and divisive. It seems like they don't like Rep. Clyburn when they say: Apparently, Clyburn's more loyal to Third Way than the Democratic agenda. Why on earth would they down a Democratic representative?

6. What is not being discussed is how this move by Obama
is damaging the Democratic Brand and is undermining our chances of recapturing the control of the House in 2012.

16. Do We Think A Deal is Possible Under Any Terms Without Some Cuts
in SS and Medicare? I expected that there would be some level of cuts in this programs. I saw the no cuts in Medicare and SS in the same vein as the no increases in revenue position; as barriers to any deal. I know this is not the progressive position and I know that polls say the public doesn't want cuts in these programs. Of course they don't and neither do I but I see cuts as inevitable.
