From the Guardian's live blog - interesting fall out per NoTW closure:
*The National Union of Journalists has been inundated with calls from members of staff from all three News International titles over the last 24 hours inquiring about membership and their rights, a spokesman claimed.

also: *A number of charities have rejected the chance to advertise for free in the final edition of the News of the World on Sunday, Celina Ribeiro writes on civilsociety.co.uk.

She says that RNLI, RSPCA, The Brooke, Care International, Thames Reach, Action Aid, WaterAid, Salvation Army, VSO, RSPCA, Oxfam and Barnardo's have all rejected the offer.

Scroll down and read the morning's review of media coverage of the story from different countries. Rupert gets some mentions along the way.

Thought that those needing a distraction - might find the link and coverage interesting.

1. Now-confirmed reports that the police have raided offices of The Daily Star
Edited on Fri Jul-08-11 09:00 AM by salin
also - reports that police are investigating deleted emails of News International executives.

This is spiraling fast. Hope the Murdoch empire has its seat belt on.

Edit - subject changed from unconfirmed to confirmed by the Gaurdian

3. Yep, no one needs a union, people can stand on their own and stand up for themselves, yup, the
company would never hurt them in such a way to make them think they need protection, they're their own people and don't need a "third party" to advocate for them, mm-hm.

K&R back to zero, for whatever reason.

The shit has hit the fan and they all need a union now.

The UK Guardian remains one of the best papers across the globe.

6. its a BIG sign when the Murdoch intimidation machine loses its grip
and if indeed there is any action per unionization that eventually rises out of the implosion of NoTW - then something cataclysmic has exploded within the Murdoch Media empire.

7. Investigation into "massive quantities" of archived emails
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/jul/08/phone-hacking-emails-news-international

the evidence defies News International's claims that they are fully cooperating. Story suggests that only a fraction of emails were left remaining from two massive purges of emails between editors of NoTW and others.

Small excerpt:
Three months later, on 23 March this year, Pike formally apologised to the high court and acknowledged that News International could locate emails as far back as 2005 and that no emails had ever been lost en route to Mumbai or anywhere else in India. In a signed statement seen by the Guardian, Pike said he had been misinformed by the News of the World's in-house lawyer, Tom Crone, who had told him that he, too, had been misled. He offered no explanation for the misleading evidence given by Bob Bird.

The original archive was said to contain half a terabyte of data - equivalent to 500 editions of Encyclopaedia Britannica. But police now believe that there was an effort to substantially destroy the archive before News International handed over their new evidence in January. They believe they have identified the executive responsible by following an electronic audit trail. They have attempted to retrieve the data which they fear was lost. The Crown Prosecution Service is believed to have been asked whether the executive can be charged with perverting the course of justice.

Note - this is a recent revelation - but not a recent finding - clearly the police have been gathering a lot of evidence its just all spilling out now. And also note ' the size of the nearly deleted archive - equivalent of 500 editions of Encyclopedia Brittanica. Rur-Roh!

8. Renault is the first corp to extend its ban on adv. from NoTW to all News International entities
reports that Renault - which spent £343,829 with the News of the World in the 12 months to the end of April, 2011, according to Nielsen - said in a statement:

As a result of the seriousness of the continued allegations of phone hacking by News of the World, Renault is reviewing its media advertising plans.

Pending the formal investigations, we currently have no advertising planned in any News International press titles in the immediate future.

Not hear (Renault doesn't advertise in the US to my knowledge) but wonder if this might become a trend in UK - and at what point that trend extends to other Murdoch media markets?

13. Renault does not advertise here in the U.S but Nissan does
and Nissan can pull all there adverts from this rag too if they chose to.

14. Will be interesting to see if/when they do (pull ads)
depending on how toxic the NewsCorp brand gets here. So far, not so much. But the spread from NoTW to all NewsInternational publications does indicate some spread of toxicity. So who knows. Something to watch.

16. Indeed
Nissan is the North American arm of Renault and once they pull out, then we will begin
to see other car manufacturers doing the same.

Rupert Murdoch is a crafty individual who should not be taken slightly, he has already
purchased couple of domain names to replace News of The World, so you can see he is
already positioning himself to continue the same scandalous operation using different
pseudonym to describe his sleazy papers or online noise reporting.

9. There she blows... first public "Enron" comparison
The issue is whether a liquidator (siezing control of NoTW assets) would be inclined to shred possibly incriminating documents - in order to preserve the value of the assets to be liquidated. And here is a media lawyer's response: But the London insolvency solicitor Rodney Hylton-Potts dismissed the idea as legally implausible. "In a liquidation, a liquidator takes over all the books and records but that does not affect the obligations of a liquidator or a director to bear in mind any criminal inquiry," he said.

"The leading case in this is Enron, where the accountants, Arthur Anderson, sent around an email saying that they should shred things. They were severely criticised for that and it finished the firm.

My Enron comparison has more to do with the tipping point at which a once highly regarded corporation becomes toxic in public opinion - as happened pretty quickly with Enron. I think that we are watching this process unfold in the UK with News International. The question is how far the toxicity might spread to the larger Murdoch Media empire.

10. Is Brooks the next to be arrested?
Former Met police chief Brian Paddick has told my colleague Vikram Dodd it is now "blindingly obvious" that police would want to arrest and interview Rebekah Brooks, the controversial boss of News International.

Paddick said: "If Andy Coulson has been arrested, it is inevitable that Rebekah Brooks will get an invitation from the police that she can not refuse."

Maybe that is why she has cancelled her previously scheduled meeting later today to address News International staff.

11. one of the mentioned charities said they weren't offered free adv., but if were wouldn't accept it
because it would likely hurt their reputation and ability to get donations in the future.

(Another sign of growing toxicity of NoTW.)

12. Brooks (ex for NI and editor for NoTW and good friend of the PM) on why close NoTW
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/blog/2011/jul/08/news-of-the-world-phone-hacking-scandal#block-64

Rebekah Brooks says the decision to close the NoTW was taken because there was another two years plus ahead of trouble

I don't expect she will stay in position long. However, she is in the know. Think about this: another two years plus of trouble.

Snoutport called it right - what was an icky story certainly was the beginning of a world of anxiety for the Murdoch Media empire.

15. Whoah. Brook still in- but removed from "Internal Clean Up Committee..." and look who IS in charge:
Edited on Fri Jul-08-11 11:40 AM by salin
Rebekah Brooks is no longer in charge of the News International internal clean up committee – following a recommendation from James Murdoch and News Corp directors.

An official message sent to staff following her 4pm meeting reveals Will Lewis, Simon Greenberg and Jeff Palker – Brooks's lieutenants – will "report directly" to New York based Joel Klein on the clean-up.

Bringing the cleanup right into Rupert's sphere.

17. Must Read - Guardian's statement per what they told the govt regarding Coulson .
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/blog/2011/jul/08/news-of-the-world-phone-hacking-scandal#block-69

Before the general election the Guardian contacted all three party leaders to tell them of certain facts about Andy Coulson which the Guardian could not at that stage report.

In a telephone call around February 25th, Guardian deputy editor Ian Katz told the prime minister's director of strategy Steve Hilton a number of details about the case of Jonathan Rees, a private detective who had worked for the News of the World, which the paper had been unable to publish due to ongoing legal proceedings. These included:

(read blog entry for interesting and worrisome points perhaps for the PM per association with Coulson and that what the Guardian indicates they passed on)

None of these details was included in any report for several months until after the collapse of Rees's trial in March 2011. The thrust of the conversation was that Rees was a murder suspect who had been involved in massive corruption on behalf of the News of the World of which Coulson could not have been unaware. The Guardian understands No 10 chief of staff Edward Llewelyn was informed of this conversation.

Downing Street's reference to the private detective working for Panorama is baffling and irrelevant to how the Rees information was handled. There was no suggestion that Rees ever had any connection with Panorama until March 2011, many months after No 10 was told the details of the Rees case.

I admit I am newer to this story. But some of this is mind blowing to a newbie to the guts of the tendrils of this story. Anyone who can fill in back story - please jump in!
