Top Obama adviser says unemployment won't be key in 2012
President Obama’s senior political adviser David Plouffe said Wednesday that people won’t vote in 2012 based on the unemployment rate.

Plouffe should probably hope that’s the case, since dismal job figures aren’t expected to get any better for Obama and the economy on Friday.

Most economists expect a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to show that the nation added about 100,000 jobs in June. That’s not enough to keep up with population growth, let alone lower the unemployment rate or make a dent in the 9 million jobs lost during the so called Great Recession.

It’s looking more and more like Obama will have to do something no president has done since Franklin Roosevelt: Win reelection with unemployment around 8 percent.

22. They will make the election about how the GOP nominee is either
too extreme, inexperienced, or untrustworthy to be President.

24. Well go figure
Many will lay the same labels on Obama.

Me thinks Plouffe needs to extricate his head from his ass.

3. If this is what he really believes and not spin, I really have to shake my head.
This is beyond clueless.

I would suspect that a good portion of the unemployed (especially those whose UE benefits have run out) will be even more motivated to vote against the folks who were in charge when they lost their jobs.

4. That is just whistling past the grave yard talk
If unemployment is approaching 10% in November, 2012 it will be a huge issue and one that the GOP, despite there creating this mess, will exploit. Obama should be concerned about creating jobs not creating the impression that it doesn't matter. I didn't think he was an idiot.

7. This is the worst news I've read today.
They aren't even saying that they expect it to improve in time to help with reelection (say... about a year from now)? They're already trying to lay the groundwork for spinning the issue to something else?

To me, that screams that they don't expect things to improve substantially. And if that's the case, the election is almost certainly lost.

20. Yep... and that would probably be right
but it wouldn't make a bit of difference.

Even Democrats would say (ARE starting to say in many cases) "yes, it's his fault, but you're obviously not the guy who can fix it"

And it won't improve. In fact, it is likely to get dramatically worse.

21. Deep doo-doo denial. Plouffe needs his foggy bubble popped.
Just because you can win an election against George Bush (John McCain) doesn't mean that he can beat mass unemployment and a failed jobless recovery.

Plouffe is in deep doo-doo denial, as are the rest of Obama's circle, if they think unemployment isn't the #1 issue.

23. No. Trying to stave off total economic and political chaos will be
the top issues. Of course, unemployment is part of that picture.
