According to the sheriff.

Update: "With an extended magazine" according to someone close to the sheriff.

1. There are probably no pistols manufactured the last 100 years that are not semi-automatic
except for some novelty types like Derringer replicas and such...

2. Goodness. So, they stop making revolvers 100 years ago?
Edited on Sat Jan-08-11 08:24 PM by MineralMan
First I've heard. Perhaps your knowledge of handguns isn't complete, eh?

3. My revolver that actually looks just like your picture IS semi-automatic.

Perhaps you don't know what the term means?

edit to add: it's 'double action'. You can probably Google that.

8. I know what the term means.

New single-action revolvers are also still being made, too.

In any case, there's a clear distinction almost always drawn between revolvers and semi-auto handguns, when describing a handgun. If a cop asks you, "What kind of handgun was it?," you will answer either semi-auto or revolver. You would not identify a revolver as a semi-automatic handgun, or you'd cause confusion.

I know what you're trying to say, but you're incorrect in your terminology.

9. No
Revolvers are not semi automatic. They are either single action, meaning you have to pull the hammer back to cock them, or double action, where squeezing the trigger will pull the hammer back. Either way, it's still a revolver.

A semi automatic pistol is clip fed and may be either single action like a 1911 Colt or double action like a Beretta etc.

12. I can not let this slide: My S&W "Highway Patrolman" holds 6 cartridges, either .357 or
.38 Spl and will shoot one round each time I pull the trigger. If that's not "semi-automatic" I will kiss your ass on the steps of the First Baptist Church at high noon and give you an hour to draw a crowd.

13. And it is NOT a semi automatic
It is a double action revolver. I know, I own one, as well as one of these, which IS a semi automatic pistol.

15. Although your revolver fires just like a semi-auto, there's a technical distinction.
A semi-automatic weapon channels some of the energy from the shot to eject the spent shell casing and chamber the next round. A revolver on the other hand uses the force of the person pulling the trigger to move the next round into firing position. So while the net result is the same--both fire one round per trigger pull--a revolver is technically considered a "repeating firearm."

14. That weapon is a semi-automatic. One trigger pull = one bullet.

It may not be a semi-auto pistol but its mechanical operation is semi-automatic.

4. The sheriff said "pistol"
But that's like using the word "record" for a CD of music.

5. Sorry, I don't get your point. "pistol" is common nomenclature for a handgun
in the USA. It's kinda like a synonym. :eyes:

7. No. You got it.

He said it was a "pistol." Later someone said it had an extended mag. Make of it what you will, but it's not misleading.

BTW, this is called a Makarov pistol.

It's not a revolver, but it's still a pistol.
